Tuesday 04 November - Petco Park, San Diego
From albee albee:
Wow - I had front row. I was holding on to the metal rail! I was one of the people that got to run to the front before she sang Hung UP. She said, 'What is this space shit....fill this up!'
When she changes from 'She's Not Me' to the next song, she put on the wrong wig. The wig from the dancer dressed as her in the 'Open Your Heart' video was lying there instead of that short curly one.
All in all - no video can ever compare last night's experience. I got a taste of heaven!
From Alex:
You can imagine how happy she was tonight that Obama won! Madonna asked security not to intervene, and they let all of the floor seats 'get together'. I was in row 30 and got all the way to 1st row!
She then did her last number Give It 2 Me....so it felt like I got to be in first row for 20 minutes, security wasnt saying anything, it was so surreal, I didn't even have my camera on me.
At one point, way before, she said something weird in introducing a song, GOD! I forget which song it is, an oldie, she said 'This is for the girls, whose men make them fuck their boyfriends,' I swear to God, she was talking about Guy, I wasn't imagining it.
Then she forgot the words to Ray Of Light, totally fucked up the end of the song. She admitted it, and excused herself because she said she has a lot on her mind lately.
Basically the beginning of the show she sort of looked rehearsed, without any personality, but after the Romanian gypsy part she was AWESOME, the tickets were worth way more than $350, words cannot express just how much I wish I could see it again. But what we lucky few got tonight is priceless. Obama winning, her fucking up the words to her song, saying 'I'm so fucking happy,' telling security to stop doing their job because she doesn't like to see holes in the audience. Priceless time spent a few feet away from her, soaking in her raw, sticky, and sweet energy, NO ONE WILL EVER GET TO EXPERIENCE AGAIN!
From letitwillbeth:
She completely forgot the words to Ray Of Light, throughout the whole song. it was hysterical. She said she was sorry but she had a lot on her mind tonight. She also said today was the happiest day of her life and she really looked to be having a great time. She couldn't wipe the smile off her face.
Before Hung Up, she told security to let everyone press forward and get closer because we needed to all 'be one' and she led us in a lengthy chant of 'We are one!' and put a big Obama poster on the screens that said 'We won!' on the bottom. She wore her Obama tshirt during the last song, as did all the dancers.
At the very end, she said 'God bless America!' as she rotated around to exit backstage.
From mikesouthard31:
Madonna was in rare form tonight as I as well as the rest of the San Diego crowd were very lucky to share company with her tonight. She even said so herself, as she said 'We are so lucky to share this evening together on such a historic night and occasion.' She was referring to the 44th President Barack Obama being elected in the election. Paul Oakenfold was spinning prior to her performing tonight from about 7 to 9pm.
She couldn't have started performing any later than when she came out because there is a strict noise ordinance in place for Downtown San Diego which is 11pm. The noise ordinance of course is in place due to the number of high rise condos and hotels within the vicinity of the ball park.
She came out at about 9pm, and when her throne spun around at the start of 'Candy Shop' she had a big grin on her face. She was smiling like someone who was on acid. I swear she was waiting for the election results to come in prior to coming out on stage because I was on my phone surfing cnn.com waiting for the results myself, and when CNN made it official it was only moments after I got the web update that the lights went down, she was on her throne, and overjoyed with the biggest grin/smile on her face. It was fabulous.
You all know the setlist, so there is no need to rehash that for you. After 'Ray Of Light', she went through her usual routine of saying, 'This is the point in the show where I take requests, you know an oldie, but a goodie. Well San Diego, tonight I am sorry to say, but you don't get to pick, I am choosing the song, and it is 'Express Yourself.' I will sing a line, and you will then sing a line, etc. 'Don't Go For Second Best Baby' and then she said....'We sure didn't did we!'....referring to picking Barack Obama over Senator Old Timer, John McCain.
After that it was business as usual, with 'Hung Up' next, and then 'Give It 2 Me' finale. During 'Give It 2 Me', her and all of her dancers came out at were wearing the Barack Obama Express Yourself T-Shirts. That kind of explains why there was a shortage of them at the vendors inside the ballpark....not really there were only 9 or 10 being worn, by her and her dancers, but you know what I mean. Even though I didn't vote for Barack Obama, and I didn't vote for McCain either, it was kind of cool to see such an outpouring of support from the crowd, as well as her herself.
San Diego is a Republican city, mind you, we hosted the 1996 Republican convention for Christ sake, it was nice to see that everyone who attended the show had pulled their heads out their asses, because she demanded for us to be rowdy, and she got just that. During "Give It 2 Me", when she comes around with the microphone to get the crowd to sing along, she just didn't reach and put the microphone up to people's mouths, she actually came down off of the stage to her right, the audience on the left if you are facing the stage, and she was by the crowd to get the microphone to them.
Security were being total cocks down on the floor by the walkway is the reason she did that. I would of thought they would have known that she wanted us near her after she had us chanting 'WE ARE ONE" in honor of Barack's victory, at which time she told security to move and let everyone through to get to her, they tried to prevent that from happening, but she wasn't having it, she told one security guard....'No, you let them up here to be with me.' She got her way as always.
I know everyone who has gone to the show so far has had great experiences all their own, maybe with the exception of some people in the UK that had to deal with really shitty sound at high ticket prices, but I am happy that I attended the show on Election Day in the USA, because there were probably at least 6 or 7 times where she kept stating how good of a mood she was in, and how happy she was, and what a great day today is, and during Ray Of Light when she fucked up 3 times and made no apologies for forgetting the words due to her excitement it was great.
I have seen the show already several times, but I think it would have been fabulous to have this concert as the DVD to be released, because she "GAVE IT 2 US" big time, and we had the customized T-shirts saying Madonna 'Gave IT 2 San Diego 11/4 2008'. I of course picked up one for $40 US.
The crowd attendance had a few open seats, but according to the box office, by the standard set for the concert and the available seats for purchase it had sold out officially, or was pretty close to it. Our friends that had to go to Will Call to get their tickets asked and were told just that.
Plus when we all got downtown to the ballpark, the line to get in extending 2 blocks, but then me and my friend Seth looked to our right and were so relieved when we saw that people with floor tickets had their own seperate entrance which was not going to be half of the headache that the people entering in the other spot were going to have to go through. Paying high ticket prices does have its benefits in more ways than one.
From Jimmy:
Madonna was in VERY rare form tonight. This was guaranteed to be the BEST night of the entire tour with the election buzz and Obama's win. The sold-out San Diego Petco Park crowd was alive and well and Madonna did not disappoint. As if she waited for the election results to finalize, within minutes of confirmation that Obama won - she arrived on her throne with the world's biggest smile. She was amazing the entire night. Not that a typical Madonna show is anything less than amazing, but you could tell there was something extra special in the air last night.
She thanked the crowd and told them how special it was to be spending such a historic night together with them - a night we will all never forget. It was so great to be a part of it all.
From phillymonster:
Before Madonna launched into 'Express Yourself' she talked about Obama's win and how we have all come together as one. The whole stadium went crazy. There was a lot more to it. It was a very touching moment.
The San Diego crowd was not nearly as enthusiastic as her New York crowd, but they were better than I thought they would be considering San Diego is a conservative, laid back place. I was surprised how many str8 conservative couples showed up who did not feel comfortable with the Obama celebrations.
I think it was the New York Post who claimed that stadiums are not in Madonna's league (or something like that), at least in the United States. Let me tell you - they were completely wrong. The show worked really well and the place was, for the most part, pretty full. I would say that even though they projected 35,000 seats to be the sell-out level, there must have been more than 40,000 people. There were some random rows of empty seats and some obstructed view sections that were empty, but the crowd was very impressive.
Madonna was having fun and you can tell, by the expression on her face, that the audience's reaction moved her. She kept forgetting the words to 'Ray Of Light' but it was funny. She said, 'God knows I have a lot on my mind.'
The best performance of the night was 'Like A Prayer.' It is possibly one of the best performances she has ever given. 'La Isla Bonita' is another highlight. I also liked 'Borderline' a lot and the crowd went crazy once she started singing it.
My only complaint is that there was too much guitar. Her guitar playing has become somewhat impressive, but she seems to be playing the same notes over and over. It's as if she's using the guitar as an excuse not to dance. I also don't like 'Give It 2 Me' as the closer. It's not a tune that everybody is familiar with.
From Venus D Lite:
Last Night was the shit. I got to San Diego on Monday and after my show at the Hard Rock Cafe I ended up staying at the Hard Rock Hotel which the Petco Park was right across the street from.
The next morning I could hear them doing Sound checks at 1pm till about 4pm. I was getting excited. I got ready and got to the Park at 6:30pm. I got 3rd Row next to the Cat Walk and I was pumped.
Before the show I got to take pictures with a couple of her dancers including the infamous 'Shay' who was also in her Confessions Tour.
The show started at 9:00pm and the opening was phenomenal. She looked amazing and her energy and interaction with the audience was awesome.
I keep noticing she would look at me and look away really fast. I guess I was distracting her....lol. But during 'Into The Groove' her and a dancer came up to me and she looked at me with a big smile and was just looking at me and singing to me. I had my camera on video mode so quickly I got the camera and captured a little of that moment, after she sang the verse she gave her mic to her dancer and he came up to me with the mic to sing the next verse.
My favorite set of the Tour was Definitely the 'Old Sckool' section. Very colorful and at one point she touched her crotch. Finally the Madonna we miss. Hopefully now that she's divorced we'll get to see that more....lol.
Due to Obama's win she announced that 'This is a special evening and we are lucky to be spending it together'. At the end of 'Give It 2 Me' she had all her dancers come out in her Obama Express Yourself Promo Shirts.
It's amazing how good this woman looks at 50 and we can only expect the best for many years to come and I feel it's gonna get better.
Today I am pooped....tired....sore....you name it but it was worth it. All Hail the Queen!
