Sunday 18 July - Air Canada Centre, Toronto
From Carlo:
What a woman! The crowd never got off their feet all night....the show was high energy and well worth the 11 year wait in Toronto. She looked and sounded great.
No other pop artist has her longevity and no one else could stand alone on a stage without a deluge of backup dancers as Madonna does for a lot of the songs. Really expensive merchandise though! Lond live her Majesty, The Queen Of Pop and the best artist of the millenium!
From Jackie:
Just got home from the first show of Madonna's Re-Invention tour in Toronto and all I can say is WOW! It was truly a spectacle for the eyes and ears. I thought she could not out do the Drowned World Tour but man was I wrong. It was stunning and her voice seems to get better every year.
I can remember being a little disapointed 3 years ago not hearing a lot of the older material but not tonight there was not one she missed. I adored 'Lament' and 'Like A Prayer' the most and the scottish theme was awesome.
She made a joke that the last time she was in Toronto they tried to arrest her. She laughed and said not to worry she was a 'good girl now'. She is an amzing performer, I loved every minute of the show!
From Robert:
Just got back from opening night here in Toronto and what an amzing performance madonna gave! I managed to win pit passes which was unbelieveable since youre part of the stage. When madonna came up from the floor during 'Vogue' she winked at me!
I also managed to receive several hi-fives and madonna even acknowledged the shirt I made which said 'Made In Michigan' where I am also from. Madonna looked stunning and so full of energy. When you lock eyes with Madonna that close-up its something I will never forget.
The highlights were 'Vogue' 'Frozen' 'Like A Prayer', brought down the house and I loved the revamped 'Holiday' which closed the show. Madonna sang 100% live and the lights, visuals, stage, everything was truly amazing.
Madonna said she was sorry for being away from Toronto for so long and talked quite a bit with the crowd. This experience was one of the greatest moments in my life. A difinite career high for Madonna. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!
From Ian:
I was so hyped up to see this concert after reading everything in your website. I tend to get my hopes up and disappointed but NOT THE CASE WITH MADONNA!
She was 40 minutes late but sang hard for 2 hours. She sang hard, danced hard, and had a great time. I sat right across from her it was awesome. Her voice was strong!
From Dan:
'I'm a good girl now' Madonna stated when referring to infamous incident way back when the Toronto police threatened to arrest the 'then' naughty cone-breasted material girl. 'That wasn't very nice' she smirked with the crowd's overwhelming roar of approval.
While watching the concert tonight, I realized 'Yep, Madonna's still got it' and we got it real good tonight! The atmosphere was fantastic and I was stunned at how elaborate and amazing the show was technically. I've never seen such amazing screens and visuals, by far the best at a concert I've been to. Out of this world!
The crowd in TO went mental with songs such as Burning up, Material Girl, Papa Don't Preach, Music, Crazy For You and Holiday. She often asked us to sing along incase she forgot the words and we sure did. The vocals were spot on. The dancing, although a tad more tame for Madonna then her previous Blond Ambition and Girlie Show tours, was still impressive and flawless.
The catwalk descending over the middle of the floor was genius! It brought her even closer to the crowd which was awesome. I'm going again on Wednesday night and I can't bloody wait! Thanks for coming to TO Madonna, money well spent! :)
From Paul:
It's been 11 years since Madonna has graced T.O. with a tour. And it was worth the wait. I'm so amazed at how well this tour has been put together.
Her voice, her dancing and all around her persona really shows. Looking back at the Drowned World Tour I found it very dark. Which maybe explained were she was at that point in time. But boy have times changed. She worked it out tonight!
She seems so much happier now and you can really tell. These past few years have been a roller coaster ride for me both physical and mentally but I feel like I'm sorting it all out and tonight was one of those nights that everything seemed like it was coming into place.
I'm not going to pick each song apart cause each song holds a special place in my heart. I hope one day I will personally get to thank her in person because it's always been about the music! If I don't get that chance this is the next best thing....so THANK YOU MADONNA. THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME BRING LIGHT INTO MY LIFE. YOUR MUSIC MAKES THE PEOPLE REALLY COME TOGETHER.
From Hugh:
Firstly I must say that I still feel like last night at the ACC in Toronto was just a dream and I haven't woken from my slumber yet. I have been to all of her shows but have never felt the way I did last night. It was a religious experience making the climax of 'Nothing Fails' seem to ring true (I'm not religious, but I feel so moved).
The audience seemed to be in shock for the first half of the show until she donned her pantsuit and hairnet. She said to the audience, 'The last time I was here the police tried to arrest me, I am still a bad girl but I just happen to have two kids!' She also said that it was good to be back and asked us how many people were Canadian and how many people were not....concluding with, 'Wherever you come from, thank you for coming to my show.'
It ended to quickly and I am a bit disappointed there wasn't an encore but that didn't matter she gave us her all and the arena was left in astonishment in what a 45 going on 46 year old woman can still do. She just brought me back into the loop that I was about to exit.
Long may she reign!
From GRKGODDES777:
I am still speechless with being in the same room as the Queen. I still can't believe how she moves, and sounds, and commands your attention. You truly feel her vibe and her energy when she's performing. The show was amazing, The Beast Within was eerie, and it made you want to jump into the video screens.
I can't describe what it felt to see her perform, all I can tell you is that I am on cloud nine and no one can bring me down from this high! Vogue, Material Girl, Crazy For You, Burning Up, it was so great to hear all the old tunes. When she sang Imagine the crowd lost their minds, and I think I lost my voice! She looked like she was having a ball, and the crowd was eating it up!
Just want to thank you Madonna for making my year, I look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday and having these memories with me FOREVER! GREAT SHOW!
From Jason:
All I have ever wanted to do for as long as I can remember is see Madonna, and last night not only did I get to see her, she touched me 3 times......(I can die now!)....
I was in the PIT....and watched with WONDER & AMAZEMENT, her singing was incredible, her dancing creative....I was in awe while she played the guitar....and to top it off, today I am on the front page of the paper with the Queen herself....HONESTLY one of the BEST NIGHTS EVER....
From Anthony:
Last night's show in Toronto was absolutely FABULOUS! Madonna was really putting out despite the fact that the first 15 rows didn't seem to be as enthused as everyone in the rest of the Air Canada Centre. I'm going again tonight, so I'll be able to see how the show goes without all of the 'industry' types that seemed to populate the audience last night.
The 'Kabbalists Do It Better' t-shirt was back, and the crowd loved it when two tourists from Australia were the ones who caught it. Madonna put on an absolutely flawless performance (where did that voice come from?!), and - in an ode to 'Truth or Dare' - even mentioned at one point that she had been in Toronto for more than 10 minutes and hadn't been arrested yet!
From Brian:
Anyway, I was at the Toronto show last night and just like what others have already said, the show was orgasmic. Madonna was about 40 mins late and by about 8:30 most people were screaming, clapping, chanting 'Madonna!'. The light went out and 'The Beast Within' came on. You know the rest.
She really got the crowd going with 'Like a Prayer', 'Material Girl', 'Papa Don't Preach', 'Music', mentioning about the incident in Toronto during the Blonde Ambition Tour....and the extended 'Don't Tell Me'. Loved it!
She also asked who were from Canada, and outside of Canada. Everyone screamed both times, although you can only be either from Canada or outside. Then of course she dedicated 'Crazy for You' to the fans. But I think she was singing to me!
I absolutely loved the circus part (Hanky Panky!) and the finale. Since I sat up high enough I could see once she's off the stage, she dove right off to change her costumes.
One guy got her 'Kabbalists Do It Better" t-shirt. He was shown on the big screen and I think he was crying!
Quite a few lighters going during 'Imagine'. But I assume it's like that in every show.
M's voice was amazingly good.
From Chris:
What a night! Madonna's first show in Toronto since 1993 and she had us all up on our feet dancing and singing along with her. She looked fantastic and her voice is the best I think it has ever been!
There is so much to take in visually when seeing this show and I am sure I missed a lot as I never knew where to direct my attention at any given moment. Steven Klein's video backdrops were brilliant. I loved the new adaptation of Bedtime Story and The Beast Within....what a way to start the show and get the crowd going.
I am also curious if anyone else noticed Madonna mixing Shannon's 'Let The Music Play', albeit briefly, into Music?
From Amber:
I saw M perform on Sunday and it was incredible. I couldn't believe how much energy she had. She looks amazing in person too! I had good seats, so I could see her face really clearly.
The video screens are brilliant - Bedtime Story and The Beast Within, as well as the projections during Vogue and Frozen were so beautiful! I think they will change the way concerts use video screens from now on.
Highlights of the night were 'Like A Prayer' when the entire audience sang with Madonna, 'Mother And Father' were her voice was especially expressive, 'Vogue' which is masterfully staged, 'American Life' which is also staged brilliantly and the Die Another Day which has some incredible tango choreography.
As an interesting side note - I saw Madonna's car leaving the Air Canada Centre surrounded by a police escort. I get very nervous in crowd, so when all the confetti started flying about in Holiday I headed to leave the arena. As I was walking out of the building I still heard Madonna say 'Thank you goodnight!'
I rushed to get a cab and started to leave the parking lot. Cops stopped my cab even though our traffic light was green. A black car with police escort raced past. Then the cops made us wait until the car was far away. I told my cabbie - oh my god - follow that car - Madonna's in there! And he followed a little, but Madonna's car takes a route that has a lot of traffic lights - and her escort was sirens roaring and they don't stop for traffic on the street. But if you are behind her following her, you will undoubtedly hit a few red lights.
Pretty well planned out, eh? I'm not going to say the route that her car takes cause I just don't think taht would be right - but I will say this - after Madonna says goodnight, she must run out to her car and jet away - because she was literally off the property before any of the crowd had even become to leave the arena - in fact they were still in the venue clapping. You have no chance of waiting around to try and catch her. She will be long gone before you can even get to your car.
I supposed it's also entirely possible that this wasn't Madonna that I saw at all. It doesn't make sense that she would send out a decoy at this time either, cause there was literally no one out on the street yet.
I'm not telling this story cause I'm trying to let fans know how to catch her - it was totally chance that this happened to me - I am telling it to say to fans that there is almost no way to catch her after the concert.
The show was literally incredible.
From Pelletier:
All I can say is WOW! Madonna has REALLY out-done herself this time! The concert was utterly amazing. Not only did she sing so many old favourites but she also incorporated so many new hits!
American Life was great and I especially liked John Lennon's 'Imagine.' It really touched everyone in the crowd's hearts and made me feel great inside. Madonna said that the song had inspired her and I have to say it also inspired me!
I bought 2 t-shirts, pins and a 'Boytoy,' necklace from the concert and I have to say no matter what everyone says about the prices it was worth it....even if they were expensive....it is Madonna now so come on! She's the QUEEN!
From Diyala:
We had pretty high and far seats so they aren't the best and they were pretty tight about even having camera's in possesion....but its Madonna and even the slightest glimpse of her is fabulous! The show was great.
It totally blew me out of the water! Even a sceptical Madonna concert-goer would have to agree that she put on one of the best, if not the best, show ever in her time as an artist. She was wonderful and it was a blessing to see her at her greatest in life.
From Pinki:
Okay well you wanna here, here are a few things about last night I sat on the 30th row on the floor, excellent seats, and moved up.
At first she seemed reserved and distant, I've been to every single concert all 5 before this one. Then she really put out, her voice was beautiful and clear, and of course she looked great.
She mentioned that last time she was here they wanted to put her in jail. She was especially emotional during Crazy for You and seemed to appreciate the crowds involvement.
From Benefit:
I just have to saw that....I've known the queen of pop since her 'Like A Prayer' video came out. I was to young to go see 'Blond Ambition' and 'The Girlie Show", in 2001, I was supposed to see the 'Drowned World Tour' but couldn't because I couldn't go to the USA alone....but now that I'm all grow up....I had the opportunity to see Madonna (at last) for the first time and I was... unbelieveable. I was stunned! I mean I was on the floor section near the stage....I was up all night long with both my arms up all the way!
I was really excited that she sang a lot of her old hits....especially Hanky Panky....I thought to never hear that one again! She she was speaking a lot with the crowd and I really laughed when she said 'The last time I was here I almost got arrested' But the thing I was angry at....is that in my section where I was....I was the only one (with a woman in front of me) with both arms up all night for all 24 songs. Most people did not have their arms up....I was like OH MY GOD what the F*** are you doing!
And one time the lady who was sitting behind me she nearly grabbed me to sit down while everybody was on their feet (she did that because she was on her chair and trying to see the show)....I just looked at her and show my bad finger! Nothing happened with that hopefully! But all night long I had the best time of my life! And I sang to all 24 songs and both guys (who I didn't know) were looking at me almost half the show....I think there were amazed I knew all the lyrics and they weren't singing a lot!
This is my experience of a lifetime and I'm grateful that it happened! After the show....I didn't have a voice and I started to cry! I was so happy!
From Tracy:
Oh my god! I was at the Sunday show in Toronto and all I can still say about the show is 'OH MY GOD!' She was amazing. I only hope I can still move like that when I am 45.
The show started out amazingly with The Beast Within and only continued to get better. The multi media was the best I have ever seen, the movies running in the background were awesome, she sounded better than ever, and I still can't believe I was actually there and saw her live.
I have never been to M's show before but if she tours again I will definitely go. I am still in awe of her 2 days after the show has ended. So, to everyone out there that is just reading about the show, spend the money and go you won't regret it.
From Darryl:
It’s been close to twelve since I had the experience of a lifetime and I’m still shaking. I just can’t seem to calm myself down, I feel so full of energy and excitement that I feel like I’m going to burst. For those of you who I’m sending this to who have no idea what that hell this crazy person is talking about, I’m referring to the Madonna concert I attended last night in the ninth row and the floor! How many people can say they saw their personal idol/hero so up close and personal. Does that ever happen? I dunno.
Did I cry at all? No I didn’t cry the entire concert, the whole experience was too surreal and full of energy for those kinds of emotions. Watching the show was too euphoric; it was like having the best drunk without the intoxication or being on ecstasy without the impaired judgment or brain numbing effect I’ve heard that drug has (and for the record, never tried it....never will! It’s just from what I’ve heard from different people who have done it, the feelings seemed on par to what I went through last night).
Did I jump up and down and scream like a schoolgirl? Hell Yeah! From the time the show started (Madonna/Ester/My Idol was, like, a half hour late last night....Diva!), I didn’t stop. Yelling, screaming, jumping up and down, waving my hands in the air, and dropping things.
How did Madonna look in person? She looked more stunning and beautiful in person than she does in her videos, movies and photo shoots. When she really smiled last night during the intimate moments with the crowd, it was a spectacular sight that just melted my heart. In addition, her legs and arms were killer!
When the light went out, and people went nuts. The show started with a film set to a remix of 'Justify My Love' called 'The Beast Within' that was shown on those two big screens. I started taking pictures like crazy. The film was largely based on this bizarre photo shot that Madonna did for 'W' magazine last year while promoting 'American Life'. I was kind of disturbing actually, with a lot of weird imagery. But, it was cool as well. The two screens eventually opened up to reveal the stage, which had three other screens on it, one large one in the center and two smaller ones to the side.
I remember seeing barking wolves on the screens to the sides, and Madonna in a weird yoga pose in the center. There was someone suspended at the very top of the venues roof. The person next to me said it was Madonna, but I doubted it....looked a little too dangerous for her. She finally emerged from below the stage on a platform doing yoga moves. She did a headstand, and totally arched her body like a bridge....so cool.
She started singing 'Vogue' in such a clear, deep voice. She was wearing a corset, with back shorts, kick ass black boots, and a black ribbon in her hair tying it back, no vocal strain present at all. Took more pictures, and was tapped on the shoulder by the guy to my right. A security guy wanted me. I wasn’t leaving my seat. I quickly took the batteries out of my camera, toss them on the floor, put the camera in my jeans pocket and went back to watching the show. The camera was a pain in the ass anyways.
By this time, she was joined on stage with her dancers who were also dressed in Victorian styled costumes. The choreography was excellent; although I don’t remember many moves....it was all such a blur.
The second number was 'Nobody Knows Me', an excellent dance track off her amazing most recent album 'American Life'. She did this number in the same costume, by herself. A lot of high energy dancing, and use of an onstage conveyer belt, which she used to maximum effect in this song. She also got on a platform that rose up on the far right hand corner of the stage, and at one point hung her body out over the crowd. During this number, the couple behind me had their camera confiscated by security, which was kind of distracting.
Next song performed was 'Frozen' which she again performed herself. It was only then that I spotted Donna, Madonna’s long time backup singer and dancer, with the band behind. She had a Victorian outfit and wig on. At this point, Madonna took off the ribbon she was wearing. Her voice was amazing in this song, especially when she sang, 'If I could melt your heart, we’d never be apart'. The screens behind her showed images of naked people holding each other. Images dealing with religion, birth and re-birth seemed to be reoccurring themes in this show.
Then came 'American Life' a full production number. Madonna emerged sitting on a bunch of television sets with her background singers dressed in military outfits. She also had a black beret on. From both sides of the stage, dancer dressed in different outfits, which ranged from nuns and priests, walked on stage as war imagery was shown on the screens from behind.
Then this v-shaped thing pointing toward the audience lowered from the roof. One of its sides was directly on top of me. By this time, a guy in a cage was directly in front of my section. He was slamming up against the cage, trying to break it down. A quick peak to my right revealed the same set up on the right hand portion of the stage. The male dancers then all came on stage, dress in military wear as well, proceeded to climb up on the v-shaped catwalk. I literally watched Madonna walk right by me as she looked down at us, and I went nuts!
My favorite Madonna song, 'Express Yourself', was the next selection. At the beginning of the song, she yelled out 'C’mon Boys, Do You Believe in Love?' in place of 'C’mon Girls'. If I wasn’t trying to call Kevin on my cell so he could hear the song, I totally would have gone nuts, jumping up and down. The choreography to this number was great as well, and they did a number with guns where the dancers and Madonna pretty much used them as poles.
I also remember Madonna and her backup singers being over in my section when she sang 'So if you want it right, better make him show how' while they slapped and shook their asses and did a dip.
Next song was 'Burning Up' from her first self-titled album. She did this one alone on stage, and she played electric guitar during the whole song. Again, amazing and flawless. Her guitar playing has come along way. She followed this song up with an old favorite, 'Material Girl'. Before she started this song, she took some time to talk to the audience. She said 'Hello Toronto, the next song is going to go even further back and sometimes I forget the words, so you might need to help me'. Couldn’t help but think though, 'Burning Up' was released before 'Material Girl'?
Despite the fact that she played electric guitar during this song, and it was more of a 'rock' arrangement, it still sounded like 'Material Girl'. She got the audience to sing the chorus at times near the end, as well as the refrain 'Living in a Material World' to, which people seemed more than happy to do.
What followed with a dancer dress up as a circus-style performer doing some cool back flips, and breakdancing moves. There was also a skate boarder at one point, a dancer that swung fire, a female dancer danced in an oriental styled costume, as well as Madonna lead guitarist. All of this was set to instrumental of the song 'Hollywood'.
Madonna emerged again in a cabaret style outfit, and the stage had a circus theme to it. She stated to sing 'Hanky Panky', the song about the pleasures of receiving a 'good spanky'. Choreography in this name was great as well, and it was strictly a girl only affair as it was Madonna and her female dancers, all, whom were wearing dark bob wigs, on stage. 'Deeper and Deeper' followed. This was the most changed song from the original that she performed all night. The song, once a high energy dance number, was now a slow jazzy styled song. She performed it alone along with her band.
Her recent hit, 'Die Another Day' followed, and she was joined on stage with her male dancers for a very tightly choreographed tango style number. The images in the screen behind showed a lot of blood, needles, as well as images of an elderly man and of a new born infant crying.
The number ended with Madonna’s dancers very forcefully placing Madonna on an electric chair and strapping her in. From the chair, she performed 'Lament' from Evita, probability her strongest vocal performance of the night. When she sang the lines 'and how I lived, how they showed, and how soon the lights were gone' he voiced sounded so powerful. It was the only part of the night where I didn’t move at all, and just watched with amazement as her voice was giving me goose bumps. When the song finished the chair lowered off the stage as light flashed…very powerful.
A music video filmed for the tour to a remix of Madonna’s song 'Bedtime Story' followed as female dancers swung on these swings high above the stage 'Cirque du Soleil' style.
Madonna was then lift-up from below the stage right in front of my section, sitting on a stool with an acoustic guitar. She had a suit style outfit on without a jacket on. I went nuts, start jumping up and down, screaming out her name....I mean she was so close. Actually, the whole section went crazy; I really think we had the most energetic crowd in our section.
She started sing 'Nothing Fails', which all of us started sing along to. She must have really liked this because she had this huge, genuine smile on her…. she seemed really touched. It was a beautiful sight.Again, she sang the song beautifully and flawlessly. Amazing!
What followed was a great performance of 'Don’t Tell Me' with the dance moves and choreography straight out of the video. When she ended the song she kept getting stopped from the screaming of the audience so she kept repeating, 'Don’t ever tell me to....' Eventually she yelled out 'tell me to....what? Tell me to what Toronto?' To which the crowd yelled out, 'to stop'. It was so exciting and vibrant.
She then said, 'The last time we were in Toronto, the police almost arrested us. I’m a good girl now'. Funny ‘cause that was the Blond Ambition Tour in 1990, and she played Toronto in 1993 with the Girlie Show with no threat of incarceration. A crowd pleaser, 'Like a Prayer', was performed next and Madonna basically did this number alone with her back-up singer and the band. There were images of a black choir shown in the back screens. Amazing vocals yet again.
She then performed another newer song, 'Mother and Father' off the 'American Life' album. She did this song acoustic style and played acoustic guitar.
The last song of this set was a cover of the John Lennon song 'Imagine', which she introduced by saying 'the next song is one that I wish I wrote because I’m inspired by it' in a very matter of fact way. Images of war, and peace flashed on the screen. The images that got the biggest crowd reaction was a shot of John Lennon. I had my hands in the air, and it felt only right to make peace signs with my fingers. Guess people were thinking the same thing, cause people followed suit shortly there after.
Near the end, Madonna was over in our corner again, with her hand raised in the air. She pointed her finger down at our section as she sang, and she seemed to point at me at one point. Amazing and powerful.
Dancer playing drums and bagpipe players entered the stage at the conclusion of this song. They were dressed in Scottish kilts. Then Madonna literally shot up from below the stage and went into 'Into the Groove'. She wore a wife beater and a kilt, as did her dancers. She shouted out 'We’re just getting this party started Toronto. I want to see everyone standing up, including those few in the front there' and proceeded to point to people sitting down in front in the center (they were older by the way....like, how lame).
This was probably my favorite choreographed number of the night, complete with a very intensive routine with pole and a special appearance from Missy Elliott, on the screens of course. Madonna was full of a lot of energy during this particular number.
The next song was 'Papa Don’t Preach'. She quickly pulled on a black shirt with white lettering that read 'Kaballists Do It Better'. She again told the people in the front to get up, and said 'like them over there' and point to my section. Of course everyone in my section went insane. She performed the song with her female dancers and back-up singers. The choreography was innocent and child-like as she spun around in circles by herself, and then held hands with her back-up singers and dancers in a ring-around-the-rosy kind of fashion.
At the end of 'Papa Don’t Preach' she sang the 'Do I have To change my name' line from 'American Life'.
The next song 'Crazy For You' presented with a very special moment. She said that it was nice to be back in Toronto, and that just because she had kids doesn’t mean I don’t like having fun. She went on to ask where people were from, saying, 'shout if you’re from Canada, shout if you’re from not from Canada.' She then went to our section of the stage and got on a platform that raised her up. She then said that this next song was for her fans, regardless where they were from.
I shouted out something lame, like, 'you fucking rock' really loud, and she looked down at our crowd, bend her head down, and started laughing and the song started. Not saying it was me who did this, but timing seemed too perfect. The whole audience sang along to this song, and again Madonna had a huge smile on here face. At the end of the song, she ripped off her t-shirt and tossed it into the audience....three rows ahead of me.
The guy who grabbed it (well grabbed most of it....it was ripped apart) jumped up and down and the girl next to him hugged into he and they started kissing. Nice moment for a couple, I’m assuming of course that they were a couple.
Then came 'Music', a high-energy dance member. Madonna started this song on these white blocks that changed color with the beat of the music. A DJ was also located in the center of these blocks. A video screen dissented to show a disco ball. The conveyer belt was used again for this number as well, and the choreography was excellent.
The final song of the night was 'Holiday' where the catwalk was used again. When Madonna walk by this time, I got up on my seat and start jumping up and down to get her attentions. They also sprayed confetti, and of course I took some home with me. The show ended with those two big screens closing to reveal the words: 'Reinvent Yourself'.
From behind these screens, Madonna yelled 'Goodnight and thanks' and I could see her and the dancer hugging each other from below the screens.
Well, it was truly an amazing experience....and it’s one I’ll reliving again Monday night! I realized half way through the show last night that I needed to see it again. I planned to go to the scalpers today, but I checked ticketmaster today and they released new seats. I’m going to be in row 14 on the floor tonight. I couldn’t believe it! It must be VIP tickets that didn’t sell.
But the show was amazing, she looked and sounded beautiful, and I have never screamed, yelled and been so excited in my life. The only thing that would have made the experience better was having someone special there to share it with. Regardless, it was truly an excellent moment in my life, one I will never forget, and I thank you guys for letting me share it with you.
From Estelle:
8:05 PM: Almost every single seat has been taken in the ACC in Toronto, and little groups of people scream every now and then as if it was their first concert ever. I was sitting right next to the stage in row 1, therefore had a great view of the stage. And tonight, let me tell you that the crowd was into it (more than the Worcester show I had attended a few weeks ago), and ready to get reinvented!
MADONNA ROCKED THE HOUSE! The two songs that the crowd seemed to have appreciated the most was LIKE A PRAYER, and IMAGINE (in my opinion). Right before IMAGINE she said something like 'Although this next song was written before I was born, the words inspire me....and when you get inspired by something, you have to do something about it, right?' God, I felt she was speaking directly to me!
Also, for any future Reinvention tour goers, hide your posters from security guards! I made a poster written CRAZY FOR MADONNA and I had a red holiday hat like in DWT, and the security guards came up to me about 5 times to put it down and they almost confiscated it....but then I found it funny how it showed up on the big screen during Crazy For You....I guess the camera man liked it....
Oh and during a song, there was an Australian dude in the 5th row or near there, and he put a huge Australian flag up and MADONNA pointed at him and gave him a cute little smile! She even gave him her shirt KABBALISTS DO IT BETTER afterwards.... =)
She was truly 'inspired' as she said and we gave her 'the inspiration she needed although she didn't get much sleep.' It was visible how pleased she was with the crowd and the love she got back.
DON'T MISS OUT GUYS! GO SEE HER FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T HAVE TICKETS YET!
From Wade:
WOW, F'N AMAZING! I have been a fan for many years and 'M' has never looked and sounded better than she did on Sunday night! The moment the lights went down I was on my feet, screaming 'Madonna', waving my arms, jumping up and down the entire show thinking I could get her attention. The moment she was on stage was a magical moment that I will never, ever forget!
I missed alot of the background and dancing from the dancers because I couldn't and didn't want to take my eyes off of her. Each time she did a classic dance move or said something only Madonna would say the fans, including myself, would go crazy. I was hoping she would have said the 'F' word at least once but she kept it clean.
In case you read this Madonna, you are an amazing artist and no one will ever out do what you do, thanks for bringing your show to Toronto.
From Julie:
OMG! The most defining moment of my life - Madonna looked me DIRECTLY in the eye! (3 times!) My seats were so close to the stage, damn security would not allow a single photograph, though I did get a few - one really AMAZING shot! All I needed was one - I'm happy with that, but I could have gotten a zillion AMAZING pictures!
I met the lovely MaDiva as well, who wore a shirt that read 'Madiva Knew It Better!' and I also rubbed elbows with Madonna's personal stylist!
I wept and wept when she sang DEEPER AND DEEPER - my GOD! Her voice is AMAZING! This woman is the most AMAZINGLY STUNNINGLY AMAZING live singer in the world! I'm just speechless and nothing can describe her voice on Sunday night - nothing.
I loved all the imagery as well, including Missy Elliott, Madonna's Mother, and John Lennon....also Madonna hyped the crowd with the intro to ME AGAINST THE MUSIC and asked the crowd 'Is anyone here not from Canada?' when we all screamed she replied: 'Thank You For Coming.'
A guy in front of me caught her 'Kabbalists....' shirt and he would not stop smelling it :) AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING! Dream Come True.
Monday 19 July - Air Canada Centre, Toronto
From Chris:
Wow! Just got in after 2nd night in Toronto and she was at her peak. Madonna proclaims 'you are the best audience so far....that's no shit!'
She even tripped and fell while she climbed the catwalk during Holiday, but she just laughed and went on. What a Superstar! Thank you for making my summer.
From Paul:
Hello again! I just want to say that the show tonight was far better than last night. The crowd was F(*king great!
The highlight for me was Like A Prayer. Madonna's light was brighter than ever! I'm so looking forward to Wednesday's show cause I'm in row 20 right in front of the catwalk!
For those who went you KICKED ASS!
From Carlo:
2nd night - this time 11th row! This was the best concert of my life! She is gorgeous at 45 and can move like no one's business! She thanked the crowd for inspiring her and giving her the energy for the show!
She slipped on the catwalk during HOLIDAY and said 'oopsy-daisy'. She was having a blast, collapsing after PAPA DON'T PREACH. Our sign also made it onto the huge screens above. It read: MADONNA, DON'T STOP, WE LOVE YOU. She looked at it during NOTHING FAILS, DON'T TELL ME and CRAZY FOR YOU.
She also finally made it clear that we 'don't HAVE to call her Esther!' I love her! Re-invention rocks!
From Tpcorless:
Just got back from the second night of Madonna's Toronto stay, and all I can say is 'Wow!'
I was a little skeptical since all the reviews have been so positive so I thought maybe it was just hype. But it's not. The show is fabulous. Toronto is sometimes known as being reserved. Well, they can throw that out the window! The crowd was so pumped that even when Madonna arrived 45 minutes late on stage, we didn't care; we wanted more!
It was obvious Madonna could feel the love as she said, 'You're the best audience yet, no s--t' and 'You inspire me'. There were even more surprising moments. The first being when Madonna addressed the Esther controversey. She said flat out, 'You don't have to call me, Esther' and started singing a reprise of American Life, 'Do I have to change my name....?'
But the biggest shock came when during the closer 'Holiday' Madonna FELL! It was very noticeable and it took her a second to get up again but get up she did! She's amazing! Thanks Madonna and what an awesome crowd! I'm so proud to be a Torontonian!
From Torontoboy:
This was officially the best night of my life. I kid you not. Firstly, the crowd was UNBELIEVABLE! I have *never* seen a crowd go so buck wild for a show - it even took Madonna back - she was smiling ALL NIGHT LONG!
She shouted 'YOU ARE THE BEST CROWD YET! - NO SHIT!' Naturally this was followed with thunderous applause.
Notable moments:
- She fell HARD during holiday on the catwalk, but got up and laughed it off.
- After PDP, she lied down, and said 'I'm SOO tired'....drank some water, and told a story: 'You know, I didnt sleep very well last night, and I wasnt sure I could make it through this show....but your guys energy has been amazing! You inspire me!'.....and the best part: 'One more thing....(giggles like a school girl at this point) 'you know...you dont have to call me Esther!' She breaks up laughing!
- Right before Imagine she said 'this song was written 35 years ago, but not by me, because I wasn't born yet'....HUGE APPLAUSE AND CHEERS!
Now the reason it was the best night of my life was because I was 2nd row LEFT FLOOR, with two of my friends. We made t-shirts that said 'MADONNA, LONG MAY SHE REIGN', and wore them together. When Madonna came over for NOBODY KNOWS ME, she immediately spotted us going WILD. FROM THEN ON SHE DID NOT FORGET US!
Everytime she came over she paid us SOOO me *SO* much attention, I kid you not! Poiting at me, perma-smiling at me, and complete eye contact with me for a good FULL MINUTE of NOTHING FAILS and CRAZY FOR YOU! She loved me and my friends....
Even the guys in the front row turned around and said 'you lucky guy - she f*cking LOVES you!'
I could have died.
This was the best show I've been to on the RIT (this was my 4th), and we were surrounded by people from NYC, SAN FRAN, CHICAGO etc. - they all concurred: Toronto delivered Madonna the crowd she was waiting for her, and this show deserved.
ALL HAIL THE QUEEN - LONG MAY SHE REIGN!
From Marcos:
Just got back to my hotel room from Madonna's 2nd night in Toronto. I flew all the way here from California to see 2 shows because I missed the LA and Anaheim shows.
Tonight's show was BY far better than last night's. Madonna said she didn't sleep well last night, but thanked the audience for inspiring her so much.
The audience was FAR more motivated tonight, everyone was singing and the ACC was filled with energy. I had the opportunity of going backstage before the opening night in Toronto, and even the energy back there was a little chaotic. I hope she is able to rest and enjoy her day off to come back strong for the 3rd night in Toronto.
She said things like: 'You guys are my best bunch yet....' and also....'You don't have to call me Esther, you know'....
Madonna had a little mishap during HOLIDAY as she went up the steps into the catwalk, she tripped on the last step and fell. She was down for a few seconds, but then popped up and said 'Oops, I fell!' The surface of the catwalk is quite rough, so I am sure M has a little boo boo on her knees.
Me....I am back to California in the morning - very happy I had a chance to fly here to see the shows, which in my opinion, is her best tour yet!
From Trevor:
I just got back from the Re-Invention Tour and all I can say is OH MY GAWD! What an unbelievable spectacle. OH MY GAWD! Everthing about this show was incredible. All the reviews and articles I had read about this tour are true: the stage, the costumes, her voice, the dancers....unreal. She told us that we were the best audience. She had also mentioned that she didn't get much sleep last night and wasn't sure she would get through the show, but our energy kept her going. We inspired her.
Madonna still remains the most talented and interesting woman EVER. Nobody can beat, or even match what she has done. I can't wait to see the show on Wednesday from the fan pits. OH MY GAWD!
From Vicious Hotty:
What a night it was....Madonna seemed very pleased with the audience....so much so that she said 'This is the BEST crowd yet!'....and made many references to our city....which the crowd ate up.
She was way more talkative than any of the reviews I've read....she even addressed the losers in the media that have been saying she's changed her name to Esther by saying 'You know you guys don't have to call me Esther'.
The Crowd truly was MAD for MADONNA....the moment the lights went out....however I gotta' say even though we were sitting in the $300.00 section there were 5 f*cking Bitches in front of my friends and I that were sitting for most of the show or holding on to there ears for the rest with the arms folded....so....of course whenever they sat down I would bash the backs of there seats with my feet....lol....u shoulda' seen the dirty looks....I just told em' 'You don't pay $300.00 to see Madonna and sit down!'
The show itself is AMAZING....fav's include 'Nobody Knows Me', 'American Life' (Suprisingly), 'Burning Up', and 'Holiday'.
However there is so much visually going on that u miss....and that I'm sure I'll pay more attention to on Wednesday night....CAN'T WAIT!
I was so proud of Toronto for giving Madonna the welcome she most certainly DESERVED.
From Simon:
Some have called me crazy for buying tickets to all three Toronto shows. I call myself lucky.
Last night's performance was absolutely AMAZING! We've all heard the reviews about what I great performance it is, but I'll take this opportunity to share with you the unique 'Madonna-Audience' chat that made this show special. First, during that 'quiet time' with the audience after Papa Don't Preach, Madonna fell to the stage floor, exhausted and said 'I'm so tired....I didn't think I could make it through this show.' But then, climbing back to her feet, she shouted, '...BUT YOU GIVE ME SO MUCH ENERGY. YOU INSPIRE ME!' Needless to say, the crowd went mad upon hearing this.
Another point of interest that made this show memorable was when Madonna tripped on her kilted skirt and fell on the catwalk steps. She laughed and recovered gracefully. Her dancers gave her encouraging hugs and helped her back to her feet.
To those fans who don't plan on attending this show, I urge you to please reconsider - you will not be disappointed! The show is a spectacle to end all spectacles and it's those little human moments of Madonna that make you appreciate her that much more.
From Jacquie:
Last nights show in Toronto was amazing! I was my first Madge show ever and was not disappointed, neither were all the other fans there. There was so much energy in the arena. The dancing, songs, and the videos blew me away.
The best performances had to be Like a Prayer (everyone stood up and danced like crazy), Burning Up and Die Another Day.
I also can't believe she is in her 40's. She looked so good and the backward bends, hell I could never do that! She definitely still has it and will for a very long time. Long live the Queen!
From Ericka:
I saw the Madonna show in Toronto on July 19th. It was excellent. Her voice was amazing! She has improved so much over the years. The show started 45 minutes late, but when she came out the crowd went wild! I was almost going to cry when I first saw her. I would just like to say that no matter where you are sitting you will have an awesome time. I got cheap tickets for 49.50 and my view was still amazing. So if there are any fans who have cheap seats - don't worry. It is an experience you will never forget.
There were some fans who dressed like madonna at the show also. A couple girls were dressed in wedding gowns like madonna when she did 'Like A Virgin' way back in 1984. My favourite song of the night would have to be Like a prayer. Everyone in the building was singing it. It was amazing! Her voice sounded amazing in every song but especially in Deeper and Deeper. She doesn't lip synch at all. She sings live the whole time!
The show is very energetic and I was up on my feet the entire time dancing and singing. A tip to future show goers - she sings Crazy for You to the left of the stage so if you have those seats you are really lucky. In the middle of the show she told the audience that they don't have to call her Esther. The media has been bugging her about this and it has gone too far.
Madonna looked great, sang great, and danced great. Everyone who's going to the show have a great time!
From Tom:
I attended the Monday night show in Toronto, and it was just incredible! She was about 45 minutes late, and the crowd just kept screaming even before the concert started!
'The Beast Within' was just so creepy, it gave me goosebumps. Steven Klein did an amazing job with the video footage.
I have never heard a crowd scream so loud at a concert!
From George:
I attended the Sunday and Monday show at the ACC. Sunday, I was way up in the nose-bleeds, but the show was still good, considering it was my first Madonna show ever, and I have been a fan since Like a Virgin. The crowd was very boring and they sat down for most of the night.
Mondays show, I was 19th row. The show was off the hook! What an amazing crowd. Nobody sat down for a second. Madonna put on an amazing show, telling us that we were her 'best crowd ever!' Toronto went absolutely crazy at that point. She put on such a great show. She looked like she was having a blast.
During Holiday, she was climbing up to the catwalk and she tripped on the steps. She stayed there for about 5 seconds, then got up, gave a little 'oopsie!' and continued to have a good time.
After leaving the concert, my friend and I were literally speechless all the way home. Madonna, you put on an amazing show and thanks for such a great night that I will never forget!
From Chris:
Wow! I've listened to her music since I was a young boy in the 80's and now finally, at the age of 30, I saw her for the first time ever last night.
The most theatrical concert I've ever been too. I thought her voice was much more powerful in person, especially on the ballads. Frozen was quite impressive.
The scalpers outside are selling tix for what they paid for them....don't miss it.
From Showgirlsharon:
Oh my God! I simply died seeing the muse, the diva, the most fabulous, glamorous woman in the entire world. Many times I have danced to Madonna's music yet before THE QUEEN herself is an event I shall never forget. The memories of The Goddess shall always remain.
'Nobody Knows Me' is my theme song now. Simply the best. Once in a lifetime chance came up and I seized the moment and saw one of the best performers of all time. Viva Madonna!
From Charles:
Thought I'd drop a line and say how wonderful my first Madonna concert was. Never saw anything like it and doubt I will ever again. Everytime I see, hear or listen to the ever changing chameleon I feel a sense of Deja Vu all over agin. Shivers and tingles run along my spine. The music is inviting, enchanting. Quite enraptured by the soulful music of one of the best musical genius's of all time.
Will never forget that one special night. It will remain in my heart, mind and soul....forever. The best song and performance was 'Nothing Fails.' And nothing does.
From Allan:
I attended the Monday night show in Toronto and WOW what energy and excitement! The mere fact that she went non-stop for close to two hours was truly amazing. She most certainly did not disappoint. I was sitting, or should I say standing, at the end of the front row (to her left) and man, WHAT A VIEW! Throughout the show she would make her way to the corner of the stage, just in front of me, where she would acknowledge all of us in the front row. She is a lot thinner than I thought.
Standing next to me was a number of girls, with backstage passes from Madonna’s entourage. They would comment throughout how disappointed they were with all of the fans SITTING in the stands on the side of the stage! I must tell you they were NOT impressed with Toronto. They laughed and said that she should have played Montreal instead!
Anyway the seats were well worth the money, the t-shirts were well worth the money and the show was well worth the money. Great experience, wrong city....
From Darryl:
First of all, decided on a lark to try ticketmaster.ca yesterday morning. Was lucky enough to get Row 14 on the Floor on the opposite side of the stage then where I was the first night. As I mentioned, on the first night I was on the rear left hand side of the stage, which turned out to be amazing since she does a number of songs from that corner ('Nothing Fails' and 'Crazy For You' are done from the left hand side).
But, I thought the fact that I'd be on the right hand side the second night was cool as I would get to see a different perspective of the show. So, got to the concert and started freaking out again due to how close I was. I couldn't believe I was actually going to see Madonna again!
The show started late again, at least an hour late! On the first night, she was forty-five minutes late according to the 'Toronto Sun', but I was so excited Sunday night I didn't even notice this. Only a star as big as Madonna could get away with this. So the show starts again, and my level of excitment is pretty much the same as on the first night. I was actually a bit calmer though, and did not have to deal with the camera thing, so I got to directly attend to the concert. Still every bit as amazing as it was last night.
Those yoga poses that Madonna does at the beginning of 'Vogue' are just so incredible. I want to be her at 46!
Vocally, she was also just as powerful as she was on the first night I saw her. Actually my view from the right hand section of the stage gave me a better view of 'Vogue' and 'Nobody Knows Me'. Of course she rose up on that platform again during 'Nodody Knows Me' on the right hand part of the stage and swung her body out towards the audience. Amazing!
When she started 'Material Girl' last night, she said 'Hello Toronto, here's other oldy but goody. Sometimes I forget the words, so are you gonna help me?' The response was a roaring 'yes' from the crowd.
During 'Hanky Panky' she made the adlib remark 'Is that too much to ask?' that wasn't present in the first night. Her performances of 'Don't Tell Me' and 'Like A Prayer' were more spirited then the night before, and at the end of 'Don't Tell Me' she commented that we were the 'best audience' she had so far.
When she introduced her cover of 'Imagine', she again said it was a song she wished she had wrote but of course she didn't as it was written over 30 years ago and she wasn't even born yet. She then let out a big laugh. I liked this comment more that her very matter of fact 'because I'm inspired by it' the previous night.
After all the spining and twirling during 'Papa Don't Preach', she pretended to collapse to the floor and lay there for a couple of seconds before telling the audience that she was really tired. She said something to the effect of: 'You know, I didn't sleep very well last night, and I wasnt sure I could make it through this show....but you guys energy has been amazing! You inspire me!' She yelled this with so much genuine enthusiasm.
She then told the audience "one more thing....you know...'you don't have to call me Esther!' and she then laughed. I'm assuming someone had a shirt on that said this in the front row, or that someone made a comment.
She then directly went into 'Crazy For You' which she did from the left hand portion of the stage again. She stated before that song last night that this was for 'her fans that stuck with her for the last twenty years' which she yelled out. If I wasn't so pumped, excited and had so much energy I probably would have bawled.
Again the night concluded with 'Music' and 'Holiday' which were even more spirited then the night before. Her performance of 'Music' had so much energy. If she was tired, she was fighting it well and gave it all she had.
Unfortuately, when she took to the catwalk during 'Hoilday' she fell face first after climbing the stairs while singing. As I was on top of my chair when this happened, I saw it all very clearly. A dancer helped her up and she looked kind of embarrased at the beginning and had the expression on her face like she couldn't believe she did that. She then laughed it off and ran to the front of the catwalk, so I wasn't able to get her attention. She's amazing!
I did get the attenton, and made eye contact with one of her male dancers through and he rolled up his wife beater to show me his stomach, so that was cool. Also when Donna, Madona long time back-up singer walked by, I jumped up and down on my chair screaming her name while waving. She made eye contact with me, gave me a thumbs up and waved back, so that was, like, so cool. I love the shorter hair-do she has now.
All and all, I thought this was a better, more energetic show than the night before. Madonna seemed in a better mood, and was more conversed with the audience than the first night. I would love to go to this show again on Wednesday night, but before my parents have a heart attack....I'm not, so don't worry. I did try ticketmaster this morning to no avail, so I guess additional tickets were only released for last nights show (I was sooooo luck to get such great seat yesterday!).
When it comes down to it though, what I'll remember about the show is how good Madonna performed the songs and what a great musician she has turned into. For many numbers, it was just her and her band, all the time still being every bit as captvating as she is when she is dancing. She has also matured quite a bit. There was no racey moments in this show. But stage performance is easily her strength, and she has so much stage presence, star quality and charissma that she can fill up a whole arena and draw everyone in.
What can I saw, the woman is my hero. And my throat is killing me! So raw, you should hear me!
From Estelle:
Once again the crowd was so AWESOME! People were chanting and doing the wave for like 10 minutes before she came on stage. And BANG, The Beast Within began....
There was this guy next to me (section right next to the stage 118) who kept his arms folded all the time. He didn't even smile once! I got so angry at one point that during Like A Prayer, I tapped him on the shoulder and he finally turned around and looked at me, and I just said something like 'Cmon she deserves it!' while clapping my hands....he just gave me a weak smile and turned back around. The ONLY TIME I saw him applaud (and he only did 2 claps) was at the end of like a prayer.... anyways, thank god there were 3 guys in front of me dancing like crazy also!
One more thing, at the end of Papa Don't Preach, she just threw herself on the stage for like a whole 30 seconds and everyone was cheering and she was so out of it but at the same time she was so energized! She got up and said she hadn't slept much the night before but that we gave her energy and then, during HOLIDAY, the funniest thing happened! She missed the last step to the catwalk and BOOM, fell on her face.
It wasn't really funny at first 'cause she took quite a few seconds to get back up, but my god, I was sure at first she had broken a leg, but when I saw her continue with a smile, so I just laughed it off and made sure with the woman on my left that I hadn't hallucinated.
IT WAS SO GOOD! I COULDN'T HEAR MYSELF AT THE END BECAUSE THE CROWD WAS SO DAMN HOT! =)
From Tara:
I myself went to the Toronto Show on Monday July 19th, and it was awsome! The show, sets, costumes and of course Madonna her self were in top form.
Even though the show started about 45 minutes, it really didn't seem to bother too many, we had the wave going around and stands and screaming 'Madonna! Madonna!' it was great and when she finally came out, it was non stop until the end, she was full of engery - even when she fell running up the stairs at the end of the show during Holiday - she jumped right up and just kept on going.
From Kathy:
I was at both Sunday and Monday Toronto shows and lucky enough to be on the floor for the second night. Madonna was much more talkative and responsive to the crowd this night. She mentioned that she didn’t think she would make it through the show due to lack of sleep from the previous night, but the crowd’s energy kept her going and that it had been the best audience yet. Also, she made a point to mention that she doesn’t want to be called Esther. Amazing show!
Wednesday 21 July - Air Canada Centre, Toronto
From Terrysfairy:
Attended the final show of Mo's Re-Invention Tour. Accompanied by my beautiful wife Louisa (MO'S Home-town girl from Detroit) friends Harmonica Monica, Dancing Patsy, as well as my youngest step-workin' son Laughin' Pat, we all had the thrill of our lives seeing Madonna gyrate her luscious bod to her classics.
Prior to the event we had a debate: Old Madonna VS. New Madonna. We all decided to cast our votes after seeing the show. Only my 7th son Laughin' Pat and Monica ended up voting for 'New Madonna.' To prove his point during the discussion my step-workin' son mentioned that the majority of M's music these days since 'Ray Of Light' ('Frozen, American Life, Mother & Father,) establishes Madonna as a serious thought provoking artist in the spritual aspect rather than socially motivating and class'e pass'e (Monica's terminology) provoking 80's tunes such as 'Papa Don't Preach, Like A Prayer, Material Girl, etc.)
My favorite Madonna song is 'Crazy For You.' A tune that will always be a classic (the prime reason I attended the show.) Will never forget such a memorable event. Am ecstatic to hear that M has signed on with Sire Records and may expect at least two brand new albums in the future. Thank You Madonna! And thanks to Madonnalicious for creating a venue for fans to express their own point of views!
From Nadine:
All I can say is WOW! I've been to all three shows here in Toronto and the crowds keep getting better and better. She kept commenting on how much she loved the City and the fans. She said something like, 'If I knew I would be having so much fun in Toronto I would have stayed longer.' She also brought up the police issue during the Blond Ambition tour once again saying something like 'Let them try to arrest me this time!'
It never fails to amaze me what an amazing dancer she is, better than all the other dancers in the show. I was up close and I have to say she is so much more beautiful in person, and her cover of imagine couldn't have been more beautiful.
Overall, worth every penny and I highly recommend the show even if you're in the higher stands as the bridge that extends during the show allows for everyone to get an excellent view. Anybody who complains about the ticket prices will not do so after they see the show. Yes, they are expensive, but she definitely delivers the goods.
I was speaking to one of the guys who sets up the stage for each show and mentioned she makes $2million U.S per show and NEVER takes a tour bus (but rather flies regardless of how close the next city may be, not very surprising). She is MADONNA after all, and truly is the unstoppable QUEEN. Way to go Toronto fans, we showed her a great time!
From Dan:
'If I would have known Toronto would be this much fun, I would have stayed for months!' Madonna told the audience. Thank God she didn't, she would have drained my bank account.
My second TO concert and by far, the best! Madonna was hilarious tonight. Her mouth was at its most foul. 'Are you mother f*ckers ready?' she asked and at one point said 'oh shit' when forgetting a line. She forgot almost and entire verse of Material Girl and couldn't stop laughing. At the end of Papa don't preach, she wouldn't shut up and asked us if we should protest and stay all night so she can sing every one of her songs. It didn't happen of course but Madonna ended her Toronto gigs with the best show of all. Thanks again Mads :)
From Trevor:
I just got home from the Madonna concert and WOW! I thought that Monday night was incredible but nothing could prepare me for the view from the fan pit. I urge anyone in the upcoming cities that Madonna is visiting to do whatever you can to get into the pits. It was like an out of body experience. She looked at me, she actually looked at me. And Madonna is absolutely goergeous from that close up....flawless.
Thanks Madonna for doing something different and allowing fans to get that close. I have no voice and my body is aching....but it was all worth it. Best Show Ever....
From Steve E:
I saw Madonna in concert for the first time ever on Sunday July 18, 2004 and then again tonight (Wednesday July 21, 2004)....both shows at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
This is the BEST concert I have EVER seen or will ever see. Her voice was impeccable, the dancing was choreographed fantastically, the sets were phenomenal, and nothing can come close to even describing the atomsphere in the Air Canada Centre. 20,000 screaming fans, all singing along to the songs, and all dancing....it definitely was a surreal experience....one which I will NEVER forget.
Aside from everything, I would say I enjoyed hearing and seeing 'Music' performed live. The energy in the room during this song (and the whole show, of course) was amazing, and I don't think I've ever danced so much to one song in my life!
The first night I attended (July 18) was amazing, because it was my first time seeing her in the flesh. The performance was flawless, and very entertaining. Tonight (July 21) was more of the same, however, there were a few mistakes on Madonna's part. She coughed during 'Frozen' and then forgot some words to 'Material Girl'....she also called herself clumsy at one point before playing her guitar, and she used profanity a few times, all in good fun. I found that the crowd was more energetic and louder on July 21 than on July 18.
Both nights, I have to say that she looked very content and happy. She was smiling often and even laughed with the audience at a few occasions. You can tell that she is happy in her life, and very proud and grateful for where she is in her outstanding career. During the concerts, she was very chatty with the audience, especially during tonight's performance (July 21). I find that her guitar skills have improved, and she seems to have played the guitar (electric and acoustic) more this time around than in Drowned World Tour, (even if I only saw THAT show on TV).
No matter what Madonna will do, no matter what kind of music Madonna will release, she will always remain relevant and fabulous. Her fans are the best fans in the world, and I feel very blessed and happy to have seen her in concert twice. I hope I can see her again next time she is on tour (I sure plan on it!)
The Queen is definitely here to stay!
From Andre:
I’m a devoted fan of Madonna for 22 years. The show on Wednesday was 'INCREDIBLE'.
She made me laugh so much when she spoke to the Toronto crowd and said 'she wanted to stay at the Air Canada Centre all night long and sing her full discography of songs.'
She said 'my music director is going to kill me if I don’t shut up and start singing'. She was AMAZING.
From Soloman:
Madonna ROCKED the ACC tonight, her final night in Toronto! It was finally my chance to see her Re-Invention Tour, and she delivered! Thankyou Madonna!
Madonna was in great spirits tonight, and she played with the audience throughout the show. She even had a fit of giggles, stopping the show and making the musical director (Stuart Price) mad! She seemed really relaxed - almost too relax, because she had a few bumbles. Details:
- She coughed during Frozen and missed a line, but quickly recovered.
- She playfully mouthed some of the words to Material Girl, because she loved how the audience sang with her, even when she wasn't singing.
- During Nothing Fails, she flipped the lines 'Just take it from me' and 'Anyone can see' by accident.
- She completely screwed up the lines to the American Life reprise after Papa Don't Preach! It was hilarious. She couldn't stop laughing at something (Stuart Price was making faces at her), and she was being really, really playful with the audience!
It went something like this (and she's laughing the entire time): 'STOP CALLING ME ESTHER! Now let me continue. [Singing] DO I HAVE TO CHANGE MY NAME? Whoops, already did that! AM I GONNA BE A STAR? Been there, done that! SHOULD I LOSE SOME WEIGHT? [pinching her stomach a bit, the audience screaming 'No!'] AM I GONNA....Shit! Hahahaha, this is very unprofessional behaviour! Now let me see, now I remember....' [proceeds to sing the verse correctly again.]
She definitely warmed to the audience as the show progressed. I think she really, really enjoyed her time in Toronto, because right after Papa Don't Preach (and before the got the giggles, as described above), she yelled, 'If I knew Toronto was like this, I would have stayed for months!' HUGE applause there.
She then talked at LENGTH about how we should all stay the night there at the stadium, and how she could perform all her songs! And how we should stage 'a protest,' so we could all stay in the stadium - but then the police would arrest us! (Making reference to the 1990 Blond Ambition incident).
So as I said, she was EXTREMELY interactive and playful with the audience tonight! She even told the audience to give Stuart Price dirty looks because he was making her laugh!
In all, what an awe-inspiring concert! It was the best concert I've ever been to. I went to the Drowned World Tour and loved it, but thematically, the Re-Invention Tour is much stronger. There was a consistency to the show this time, as well as a clear message of love, peace, and the ability to change oneself. It was much warmer and joyful than the dark and cold DWT.
Plus, while in the Drowned World Tour Madonna was like an iron goddess - strong, amazing but distant - here on the Re-Invention Tour she really opened up, and I saw her as a human being. Especially because she interacted so much with the audience, and because she used that fantastic catwalk to get closer to the audience!
I had floor seats (27th row), so when she used that catwalk I was only a few feet from her! Madonna, my goddess, only a few feet from me!
Vocally, Madonna was flawless. Her voice has never been better! This woman continues to wow me. I thought her voice was amazing on the DWT, but that's nothing compared to how full, clear and confident her voice was tonight! It was really impressive - she was belting some of the numbers, yet her voice was perfect the entire night!
Favourites of the evening:
VOGUE - what an opening! Blew me away completely.
BURNING UP - I love this song, and I never thought I'd see the day Madonna would perform it. She was really belting this number, and rocking the house.
HOLLYWOOD - I know Madonna isn't onstage for this, but I love the character dancers who keep popping up!
DEEPER & DEEPER - What a brilliant vocal performance. So sultry and sexy, a new rethinking of the song.
LIKE A PRAYER - My favourite song (and for many others), this was a spiritual experience. To hear Madonna sing it live was a dream come true for me.
INTO THE GROOVE - Wow, I screamed the most for this! Pure, ecstatic joy to hear this classic performed so well.
HOLIDAY - Madonna's staple tour song. Always a delight, and an inspirational way to end the evening.
So I want to again say thank you to Madonna. Three years ago, I went to her to see her in concert in NYC; this time, she came to me - and gave me and my hometown of Toronto a spectacular event. Brava!

Kabbalists DO do it better!
I just made my way home from the last Toronto show and Madonna -don't call her Esther- was AMAZING! I've never had the opportunity to see her before this and I so glad that I did now, her voice sounded amazing (proving you can sing and dance and not have to lip-synch), her dancing was phenomenal and I even loved the bagpipes!
You can tell how much effort went into the production of the show and the musical director & Mrs. Ritchie deserve major props for the play list! The video montage for Bedtime Stories was right out of Cirque du Soleil - fantastic! There are simply not enough adjectives to describe the show.
Tonight she joked about playing all her songs which made the crowd go nuts and she joked that the police would come and 'try to arrest (her) again'.
She swore, she giggled, she screwed up the lines to Material Girl (but we all knew the words). Wherever you sat you got an amazing show!
All the little pop tarts only WISH they could do it like her!
From GRKGODDES777:
Just wanted to let all of you that haven't seen the Queen yet, to get your asses out there and see her! I was at the ACC last night for the second time and had a ball. It was splendid, her interaction with the crowd this final night in T.O. was awesome, she talked to us for quite a bit, she mentioned that she was going to spend the whole night there and sing ALL her songs....I ONLY WISHED! She also mentioned that she wished that she hadn't stayed away so long. She said that she didn't want to be called Esther anymore, but I personally think the title of Queen doesn't do her justice!
The 'Italians Do It Better' shirt made its appearance last night, and some lucky guy on the left floor (I'd say about 12-13 rows in) snagged it. Lucky bastard!
I wish at 46 w/2 kids that I look half as good as she does, and have as much energy, enthusiasm and love for life!
Thank you Madonna for giving us a great show, and memories to last a lifetime.
Until the next time we meet...long live the Queen!
From Anthony:
The best was Wednesday the 21st. Madonna was so into it. I was monitoring her every move and noticed her singing and dancing full throttle!
During the Wednesday night show, Madonna caughed at the beginning of the second verse in Frozen, but she quickly recovered by singing the rest of the song carrying the notes to her full vocal range capacity. She sounded amazing.
During Material Girl, she was singing the wrong words and started laughing hysterically and said 'I can't remember the fucking words'.
She repeatedly asked if we were having a good time and she smiled with appreciation. She told us 'It's been way too long Toronto! If I knew I was going to have this much fun in Toronto, I would have stayed a month.' She also told us 'I don't want this night to end. I'm having such a good time with you Toronto. Why don't we sleep together all night. Why don't we protest and just camp out here all night'. The crowd roarrrrrrrred like a colliseum full of lions. She later added 'Let them try to arrest me for that!' The audience laughed and cheered again. Madonna couldn't stop laughing after she said that.
Also, Madonna wore the 'ITALIANS DO IT BETTER' t-shirt which made my night since I'm Italian. There was alot of relatives and family members in the show tonight according to the press as well.
One different feature of the performance of the show on Wednesday the 21st was during Holiday when Madonna told everyone to take their shirts off. All the male dancers took off their tank tops and threw them at the crowd. Lots of guys took them off in the audience too. It almost looked like a circuit party. LOL. Unfortunately no females took them off.
This was my 14th time seeing Madonna live and it was by far the best! I'm forever moved!
From Jakob T:
What an amazing night! Probably the best night of my life. She was so cool. She was so funny! Madonna was amazing and this was the best night yet! She kept talking to the audience. ALL NIGHT. I swear that this audience was totally making her have a great time. She said she was being so unprofessional but the crowd loved it. We loved it!
My friends and I where in the 5th row and couldn't stop watching these two cute guys who where up in the front row in the center of the stage. Apparently neither could Madonna. They where wearing these awesome shirts! So many times throughout the night she would tell the couple how cute they where.
I think she asked them for their Madonna shirts at the end! They where giving it all night long. Singing and dancing and so happy! Those two guys are my heroes!
From Marianne and Eve:
Wednesday night, we had the chance to see Madonna’s 3rd and last performance in Toronto. We’re from Montreal (Quebec, Canada) and have traveled 12 hours round trip to see Her 'Madjesty'. It was worth it! We are both huge Madonna’s fans since our childhood (we are 27 and 29 years old). Thanks to Madonnalicious, we knew exactly what to expect from the show! set list, costumes changes, choreographies, background videos, and Madonna’s commentaries between the songs.
Unfortunately, our curiosity made the event less magical! Our point of view was maybe more critical and analytic then the other fans in the audience, who discovered the whole show for the first time.
The big surprise for us was to see Madonna coughing during Frozen and forgetting a whole verse out of Material Girl. Is it really possible to forget the words of a song that you have written and have sang thousands of times?
The background videos were absolutely magnificent. Madonna, at almost 46, has never been so beautiful and her voice was perfect. The show was less spectacular than the previous shows that we’ve seen on video, but Re-invention Tour was more human, sober and focused on the performance of Madonna! Furthermore, she dedicated Crazy For You to her fans, she was very playful, she talked to the crowd and she did the catwalk. It made her look more sympathetic, accessible and closer to the audience.
We have witnessed the great energy of the crowd that was TOTALLY under the charm of Her Madjesty. How amazing was it to see thousands of fans dancing and singing the lyrics of Madonna’s greatest hits (Like a Prayer, Into the Groove, Material Girl, Don’t Tell Me....)
Comic fact: We had, in the audience, a Like a Virgin bride, a Blond Ambitious girl wearing a corset and a six feet tall drag queen that caused a big reaction in the audience.
Last night, a dream came true for both of us and those moments will stay in our memories for a long time!
From Andy:
Went to Wednesday night at the ACC, and my God, I was literally blown away by everything. How amazing she looked and sounded, how the videos completely complimented each other as well as the action on stage, the choregoraphy, but most of all, the energy put forth by Madonna, the dancers and especially the crowd. It was like a big party! I sat in the 26th row on the right floor, (just under the catwalk) and saw everything amazingly.
My favourite was by far 'Into The Groove', though it's hard to pick just one, because all of the songs were amazing. I haven't had this much fun in a long time, and this is probably the best show I've ever been to (and I've seen MANY people live). The highlights for me were the constant fuck ups she had throughout the show....constantly forgetting the words, and she just yucked it up, laughing along with everyone.
What took the cake for me was looking over at my cousin as she was dancing along to 'Into The Groove' on the aisle and she was literally about 10 inches from running into Guy Richie as he was walking out with a bodyguard. She didn't even notice until I tapped her....he just looked at her and smiled (he was nice to all the people who noticed him)....best show of my life :) and long live the Queen, cuz my world was fucking rocked last night....reinvented HA!
