Thursday 08 June - Glendale Arena, Phoenix
From Allin:
My sister and I traveled all the way from Edmonton, Alberta Canada to see Madonna. We had never seen her perform before and we are both huge fans. It is disappointing that Madonna never tours Canada, Perhaps it is a grudge she carries from the arrest attempt during the Blonde Ambition Tour performance in Toronto. For Confessions she has decided on Montreal over Toronto yet there are many other Canadian cities where she would certainly sell out such us our home city, Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver. It is shocking to think she has never performed in any of these cities.
Anyway, my sister Ashley and I spent a thousand each on this show and let me tell you it is worth every hard earned penny. The performance last night in Glendale Arena in Phoenix Arizona was spectacular. We were 5 rows away from the center catwalk and when the disco ball dropped it was absolute mayhem for the next 2 hours. Everyone stood for the entire show in an arena that was 87 degrees F by the near end of the show. I can imagine that it might even get the DVD Live in Phoenix Confessions release by the approval of Madonna.
Madonna was without a doubt overwhelmed by the crowd and the energy in the room. She often spoke, probably more than any other stop so far. Madonna always had a smile and was very impressed with the crowd. It was a not to be missed experience. See this tour because it will blow your mind. As for me and my sister, we are going back home to Canada where we can ride high on this show and tell all the poor folks back at home that this was everything and more. The performance in Glendale Arena was the best so far! Long live the amazing and very beautiful Madonna!
From David:
Here is what was different about tonight's show....
She said that she had a special request for the management of the Arena to turn the airconditioner off. She said she was usually dripping with sweat by 'Drowned World.' She said 'F---' into the mic but muffled before 'Drowned World' and mumbled Stuart's name while laughing.
She talked a lot more and the 'Hung Up' sing-a-long went on a lot longer and she then added spinning your arms (ie. the Hung Up dance) and then shaking your ass cause she was tired of dancing.
She added a lot of lines, but at the moment it's all a little bit of a blur. She said the F-word and MotherF---- a lot more during tonight's show. I think the rebel in Madonna knows when she's playing to a little more conservative crowd.
The crowd was better then the LA crowds especially the Staples Center audience. Everyone was really excited and most of the areana stood most of the time.
Her entrance from within the disco ball is still jaw dropping after seeing the show four times now.
She was on tonight! Maybe the best performance of the 3 LA shows I've seen. Her voice sounded flawless and she just seemed so comfortable with the show now. She's really enjoying her and improving a little more. She definitely liked the audience much more. Rarely asked anyone to stand up.
I couldn't tell if her mic cut out at the beginning of Ray Of Light or she forgot which verse to go into. My friend thinks she forgot the lyrics. Wouldn't be the first time....LOL
The big screen did not rise until half-way through 'Live To Tell.' And then when it finally went up it went very slowly. It also did not come down for 'Sorry Interlude' and only came down half-way during the close. Lights stayed off a lot longer after the close. I knew she wouldn't but everyone thought she might be coming back.
The audience was very much different from the 3 times I saw her in LA. There were a lot more women and older people. She seemed to really enjoy saying the George W. Bush line in 'I Love New York.'
Four people (probably in their 50's and 60's) behind us in Section 102 Row 5 wanted us to sit down, even during the dancing parts, and we wouldn't. They mostly talked loudly and then finally left before the show was half-way over cause they were tired of standing!
Before the show started me and my friend thought we'd just go up to the box office before we went in to see what seats were left for Sat.'s show. We ended up with FLOOR AAA FRONT ROW SEATS 5 6!!! So excited. This will be my last show (3 in LA and 2 in Arizona) and it's the perfect way to end a great month of the Confessions Tour.
If you haven't seen the show yet, get ready. It's AMAZING. Even the mistakes make it even that more interesting!
Ok....gotta get some sleep before Saturday!
From EvolutioNtwisteD:
First and foremost! My god she is the most amazing woman and not just because I love her and admire her! I was sitting in the 2nd row at the end of the catwalk. I was overly excited with anticipation when I saw how close I was going to be to Madonna. The show was supposed to start at 8pm, when the lights went out at about almost 9pm, the ball began to drop and opening with Future Lovers.
When the ball opened - The Mother of ALL smiled looking so tiny and beautiful! I was mesmerized of course the whole crowd around me, including myself :-) was trying to reach out being only a few feet away from her. She was so close you could see the diamonds on her eyelashes. As the show went on it was so fuckin hot, but we continued to jump up and down and watch the queen at work! I thought I was going to have a heat stroke but the energy level kept us pushin!
This tour I will say was very colorful and there wasn't a lot of downtime....it was back to back with songs from beginning to end. I was in my own world the entire night! It is so hard to describe the feeling of that first moment when I see her. Just like Drowned World and Re-Invention - I was completely filled with excitement that you can't explain. I got some really awesome pictures as all of us did in our section - cameras are obviously not off limits! Thank god it's like 'once in a lifetime experience' to see the Queen Madonna.
Her body is amazing - she was continuously moving and singing excellent. My highlights were Jump, all the acrobatic choreography, Future Lovers because I was so close and the outfit she had on was HOT! La Isla bonita was nicely done and Like A Virgin.
She kept telling everyone to jump up and down and asked one guy if they wanted their money back, he obviously didn't know what was in front of him! If your going to spend that kind of money to see an amazing woman - you better be jumping up and down! I would love to be able to hopefully see her again!
From James:
She was almost an hour late, but worth the wait! She sounded amazing and she was on! At one point saying 'you're alright Arizona,' while the crowd went nuts. She was dancing her butt off and having a good time.
The highlight was 'Ray Of Light' everyone was one their feet jumping and dancing. It was sooo much fun. During 'Hung Up' she pointed at someone sitting down on the side of the stage in the stands and said 'Do you want your money back?' and the crowd loved every second. It was worth the time and money! Only wish I could see her again. Kisses to you all going to see her and don't forget to wear comfortable clothing....it gets HOT!
From Larry:
Madonna entered Phoenix hotter than hot and in her fabulous fashion, as is common with the Dancing Queen, and I loved every second of it. Apparently, there were some problems with the show, because Madonna said that she was, 'so pissed off I could kick somebody else's ass right now,' and 'everything's gone wrong with my show tonight, but you guys are so amazing that you're making me feel better.' I didn't notice any mishaps, but I was having way too much fun, and I was busy drooling at the fact that I was actually seeing Madonna in the flesh.
When she sat down to sing 'Drowned World/Substitute For Love,' she asked the arena management to turn off the air conditioning, because 'by this time in the show, I'm sweating. But I'm dry; what the fuck? I thought it was supposed to be hot here!' Then she spoke to us: 'I want you to dance. Get hot and dirty!' And then the dork came out in her, when she said, 'before I break someone's balls,' then laughed and told Stuart to shut up.
Then, onward with the concert. At the end of 'Hung Up,' she made everyone sing 'time goes by so slowly' repeatedly. Then she made us add to that by rolling our arms in the air. And then she said, 'And if you're really sexy, you have to shake your booty like this.' After we were doing it, she said she now had respect for us. It reminded me a little bit of an exercise class. And, by the way? I'd buy a Madonna exercise video any day of the week.
From Levi:
I just got home from Phoenix today and I can say it was well worth traveling all the way from Oklahoma to see her. It was another amazing show put on by the queen her self Madonna. She was very talkative and just full of energy Thursday night I can't remember what someone said or did but she flipped them off with both hands and smiled.
She also let us know that everything was going good for once during her show with no problems with the sound or anything but 'You guys aren't fuckin dancing....She screamed dance....and then she began to sing Ray Of Light....and her whole guitar thing was SPECTACULAR! She looked confortable and full of energy while playing....but I have to agree that the whole Sorry Remix was my favorite. Infact I wish she would put it out on a record of sometime with just the remix's....it totally rocked my world.
From Luciano:
Have you had the time to check out the show yet, NOTHING like the reviews, it is impossible to review it without leaving something out! This show is worth every penny you spend on the not-so-cheapy tickets....Madonna has so much energy and she tries so hard to make the audience enjoy - even though just seeing her onstage is exciting enough!
I was at the concert last night in Glendale (Phoenix) and it was completely filled with crazed fans. 'I HAVE A SPECIAL REQUEST' the diva said, 'I'M GONNA ASK THE ARENA MANAGEMENT, TO TURN OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING, I SWEATING UP AND DOWN, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?' Also, the listening crowd was not listening as she wanted us to, she demanded the whole crowd to be jumping up and down during Ray Of Light, and the crowd was subdued. There was a minor flaw during this song, SHE FORGOT THE LYRICS! but she gets back on track of course.
The most amazing and thumping part of the show is that Sorry remix, the building shakes! However, nothing compares to Music, it amazingly beautiful and Madonna's dance routine makes the audience freak and dance and do their thing. Every other detail you have to see live it is unbelievable the costumes, the cross, the numbers, the images, the lights, the dancers, to choreography, the music, the songs, her speeches, simply undescribable, YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!
From Phillip T:
I was at the concert last night in Phoenix. Very good crowd. Very diverse.
I had excellent seats on left side facing the stage, right at the edge of the row where she sings Like A Virgin. She spends very little to no time on the other platform on the right side facing the stage.
I almost think this location, a few rows up is WAY BETTER than having any seat on the floor, except right at the runway. Quite a few times, the people in the front fows and the outer sides of the floor were standing on their chairs to see her on the runway and the mid-floor stage.
It was a smaller arena than the forum and that pays off because you are close, no matter where you sit.
Security around the platforms was very cool. They let anyone take pictures, flash and all. The arena security was briefed several times by Madonna's own security, who were also there at all times, and roaming the crowds on the floor. They call her 'M.' 'I'm one of M's guards.'
I think there were a few technical problems last night. A security guard, next to us said that there had been a 2hour sound check before hand and Madonna hadn't been happy with the sound, saying that if she couldn't hear the sound on the stage, then the audience wouldn't hear it on the floor.
During Live To Tell, the screen in front of her on the cross didn't raise until the very end of the song, when she dismounts, so we didn't actually see much of her singing on the cross at all.
The sound on her mike went out a couple of times right after this, had trouble hearing her voice at those times.
Opening night, she had everyone repeating 'Time Goes By So Slowly', at the end of Hung Up. Last night, she had everyone rolling their arms in the air. During 'Ray Of Light' she said she wanted to see everyone jumping up and down to the song.
The biggest applause came for Ray Of Light, Music, Hung Up, and suprisingly for Sorry. Everyone was singing or shouting along to Hung Up.
From Ryan:
Madonna was AMAZING! I saw the show open in LA but this one she was so much more chatty. The energy from the crowd was electric and she commented that everything seemed to be going wrong so she needed the crowd to let her know that they loved her. It seemed that she was wishing she could call in sick because on the first verse of 'Ray Of Light' she began to sing the second verse and stopped singing and found her place. Then in 'Paradise' she sang the first verse twice.
Before singing 'Drowned World' she said that she had a request, that she wanted the AC to be turned off. She said that she wasn't sweating at all and that she thought it was supposed to be hot in Arizona. She said that her friend Isaac was lucky becuase he was wearing a jacket. She was joking probably because the local news stations had blown up immensly that she wanted the AC to be warmer for her vocals.
I had also scored a choice spot right by the catwalk....she stopped when singing 'Let It Will Be' and pointed at me then put her finger in her mouth as she had done in Drowned World during 'Candy Perfume Girl.' She also let me sing into the mike during 'Hung Up.' I'm still trying to wrap my mind around that I had two eye locking instances with Madonna....she gave it everything she had to give tonight.
From Teena:
'Tonight is young and the show has just begun' Madonna announced....even though the show started 40 minutes late. The show was energetic and went as planned. At one point she asked the management to turn the air conditioning off. She said, 'What's the deal? It's fucking dry. I thought it was hot in Arizona? Let's heat this place up! Let's take our clothes off....let's start sweatin'....let's get hot....and nasty....yeah! Before I break some balls!'
If you're facing the stage, she did play to the left side a lot and that's where she performs her 'saddle dance.' Isaac also sang with her on 'Paradise'. Advice to the next concert-goers: stay at your seats and watch the show! I had aisle seats in the stands and people kept walking up and down the stairs getting in my way! Watch the show people! It was truly amazing. Plan to spend a minimum of $40 for a t-shirt.
Saturday 10 June - Glendale Arena, Phoenix
From Bruce:
If time only went by as slowly as she sings in 'Hung Up. From beginning to end Madonna was simply amazing. I scored great seats both nights just 4 rows away from the Dancing Queen. When she came to the catwalk to sing Like A Virgin I felt so happy, I blessed enough to see her beauty up close and personal. Trust me she is as beautiful as seen on TV.
Jump, Sorry, Music and the Erotica/You Thrill Me medley were my favorites of the night. During the closing of the show when she sings Hung Up she invited us to sing along 'Time Goes By So Slowly', while she was not happy to have to beg some section to sing louder. She even told one guy 'You don’t look happy Mother F****** do you want your money back?' The crowd went nuts and started singing along. Before I knew the curtain came down and the last line she sang was 'I’m tired of waiting on you'. Until the next tour, thanks Madonna for the best 2 nights of my lif!
From David:
I managed to get front row tickets to the June 10th show at the Glendale Arena. Looking back, it feels like a dream. She spends so much time talking and performing for the front rows.
My friend, James, and I made t-shirts before the show that read, 'Long Live the Queen.' It was so worth it cause half-way through the show she pointed and winked at me as she passed by. I couldn't believe she noticed me and the shirt.
I guess it was difficult for her to miss it since every time she passed I would yell something or jump up and down to get her attention. After she pointed, everyone around me was like, 'She totally pointed at you.' It was definitely the highlight of the five shows I've attended. At one point she even knelt down in front of me and put the mic in my face. The picture I took of that moment turned out kinda blurry but you can see her looking directly into my camera. It was a Madonna experience to end all Madonna experiences.
Each concert has gotten better each time. Not just the show, but also my experiences at the show.
A couple moments that stood out this time....
She yelled at a fan for not standing up and kept yelling at him to stand up. She yelled something like, 'Why are you sitting? Did you not enjoy the show? Do you want your money back motherf---er?'
She threw water at the first row after taking a sip.
She sounded amazing on 'Drowned World.' It's been my favorite Madonna song forever now. It was crazy being so close to her and her glancing at me during the song.
She mentioned how she loved her front row bitches.
I stood next to three girls who were dressed like Madonna circa the Virgin period and they had been brought down to the front row because of the way they were dressed.
A crew member told me that Madonna would love our shirts. He jokingly said I should throw it on stage. I told him that I would if I could tell security as I was being escorted out that he told me too. We then both decided that I shouldn't. :)
Madonna seemed very happy with the front few rows. We were up and dancing the entire time. A fight broke out behind me on Row 2 and some man was escorted out by security. Then a fan standing closest to where the catwalk and the stage meet kept calling security and trying to get the people around him to go back to their seats and didn't think it was fair that they also got to stand there even though there is a lot of room and that space is suppose to be for the first row to crowd in. Security told him that everyone on the first row was allowed to squeeze in as much as they could.
FYI, I know we all have a hard time getting our hands on the tickets we want and once we do we want to have THE madonna experience, but come on, you're supposed to crowd in around the catwalk and the first floor.
I asked the security guard in front of me if he liked Madonna. He said he could careless, but found it funny that he kept stealing glances whenever she came by.
Her hair looked the best it ever has on this tour. It's getting longer and she looks really young with it. There's a sweetness about her that I really felt whenever she talked or performed to us on the first row. Something that I think most people miss about her.
From Jorge:
I just came back from Phoenix, I went to the second show at the Glendale Arena, someone said, 'these are definitely the most 2 expensive hours of your life', and they were indeed. The plane ticket from Los Cabos, the ticket to see her Madgesty, hotel, meals, transportation, souvenirs, etc. But every cent was worth it! She was just perfect! Beautiful, when the concert started, all the lights turned off and the crowd roaring, the screens then showing Madonna and horses, and darkness, the whole concept was sexy and fear inspiring at the same time.
I was on section 109, just in front of the right catwalk and all the people I met there where referring at me as 'the guy who came all the way from Mexico to see Madonna'.
I did not drink anything because I did not want to miss a single second by visiting the lavatories during the concert. Everything was the way it has to be, breathtaking, amazing. I danced and sang the entire night, my hands, feet and throat are still hurting after that Saturday Magical Night. It was great to see a couple rows in front of me, apparently a Mom with her daughters and some pals, all of them wearing Madonna-inspired clothes, globes, necklaces, make up, etc.
The entire concert was great, but definitely the standing ovation for all of the eternity is for Future Lovers, Jump, Like A Virgin, Ray Of Light, Music and of course, Hung Up. Again, EVERYTHING was amazing, but if we have to chose, those are my favorites, hopefully a DVD comes later.
Greetings and congratulations to all of you attending her show at some point, it's the best experience ever!
From skelly3055:
Wow!! Went to both shows in Phoenix, but will say that Saturday performance was really great, the whole crowd was just excited in the beginning and everybody was smiling and that gave Madonna the chance to dance and sing harder for us tonight.
I was handing out 100 glow sticks at section CCC to keep the party going and hoped that Madonna was gonna see how much we LOVE her. She did say thank you to the crowd a few times and was more relaxed with us again.
This time the arena was Steamy and Hot, it made me feel like I was at a Disco tech for real!
From the time the ball came down to the last number in the show, Madonna gave us all the best! The dancers were hot and we loved the moves too.
Madonna knows how to entertain us and the stage was fabulous! If you haven't seen this concert yet, you will be so happy that you did!
From Stacia:
Madonna: 'You don't look too happy, do you want your money back?' she asked someone with sour look on their face during 'Hung Up.'
I went to see Madonna here in Vegas on May 28th, but I loved the show so much, that I drove to Glendale, Arizona to see her again last night! Boy, am I glad I did. This show was even better than the show in Vegas - mostly because of the GREAT crowd. Someone told me that Madonna hadn't performed in AZ in nearly 20 years, which explains the super-enthusiastic crowd! I spent a lot of time just watching the people at the show; there were people literally dancing on the seats, one guy threw his hat up onto the catwalk during 'Like It Or Not' - she ignored it.
One moment that struck me was during 'Substitute For Love.' Everyone in our section was seated except for one girl 3 rows in front of me. I will never forget her - she was dancing slowly, and singing the song, reaching out towards Madonna, then bringing her hands gently back to her chest. She was so emotional that it made me emotional as well. She sang the entire song. It was almost like to her, she and Madonna were the only people in the Arena. I'll never forget that.
I myself have been a HUGE Madonna fan for 22 years, since the very beginning. My first tour ever was Re-Invention, and I'll go see every tour that she ever does. I can't get enough of her. I liked the songs more on the R-I tour, but there are some moments in this show that I LOVE. I absolutely love 'Live To Tell.' Who cares about the religious stuff, this performance moved me. Even though Madonna is bound to a cross, with no dancers behind her, you are still overwhelmed by her phenomenal stage presence. Everyone was singing along with this song.
I don't care too much for the album version of 'Let It Will Be,' but I loved the new 'tribal' version in the tour! Plus, I loved Madonna's 'drunken dance' that she does during this song. Her best moments are when it is just her connecting with the audience. I also loved 'La Isla Bonita,' which happens to be my all-time favorite Madonna song (I love how she gave it a new sound), and I loved the newly-vamped version of 'Erotic,' and the great dancing during this song.
Another favorite was Madonna and Isaac performing 'Paradise (Not For Me).' I think this is one of Madonna's best unreleased songs. It's from the 'Music' album; it's a beautiful, haunting song, and I loved it from the very first time I heard it on the CD. Other great moments are the 'Disco Inferno' roller skating scene, and Madonna's political message set to 'Sorry.' Great message, super hot music with a great beat, and Madonna's perfect face and bod on those HUGE backdrop screens.
Okay....Madonna is HOT. I can't believe she'll be 50 in just two years! She is in amazing shape, sexier than she's EVER been during her entire career. You can tell she is happy in life, because she radiates it. I kept finding myself looking at her ass (I admit it, okay?! LOL). Okay, she has one helluvan ass, I have to say. I had good seats, but I kept looking at the big screens to see close-ups of her face. Madonna is truly an amazingly beautiful woman.
Years ago, Benjamin Bratt said this of Madonna on the Rosie O'Donnell show: 'Madonna's the one person who can make both gay men and straight women think twice about their sexuality.' It's so true; Madonna is so sexy on so many different levels that many people think, 'Hell yeah I'd do her!'
From William B:
Last night's Confession's concert June 10th in Glendale, AZ was by far, the BEST concert and more personable Madonna yet. The arena was packed, sold out and the audience are wild! We were sitting at the floor level CCC seat 51 aisle towards the back before it goes up to the second level of the arena. We made a HUGE FLORESCENT ORANGE NEON SIGNS that say's MADONNA ROCKS and PHOENIX LUVS MADONNA. While waiting before the show starts....I leisurely walked towards the very front of the stage, checking out how far it is, it wasn't but it's accessible.
When the show starts and the DISCO ball started coming down, I started freaking out, It's NOW OR NEVER. So....my best friend and I frantically RAN TOWARDS THE FRONT ROW, IN FRONT OF THE STAGE WITH OUR GIANT NEON ORANGE BANNERS 'MADONNA ROCKS' and 'PHOENIX LUVS MADONNA' and saw the OPENING ACT UP CLOSE and PERSONAL. This was the most SURREAL EXPERIENCE of my life....to see MADONNA up close. When she flipped her hat with horse hairs and for a second MADONNA GLANCED at our signs and SMILED!
It was surreal....AND was complete pandemonium out there. Then....the security guards were whisking a woman away....carrying her. At one point, a security told us to put our signs down....we did for a second. After the second act....we went back into our seats and able to take ALL of our experience in. The audience were amazing and enjoying Madonna's presence. I was in the 2nd LA show on 23rd May and PHOENIX show....was the best, people responded well here compared to the LA shows, It was GREAT.
Madonna was relaxed and spoke to the audience a lot. She say's a lot of 'Thank yous' after some numbers, especially when the audience started screaming and enjoying her. I feel that she felt welcome and glad to be performing in the Valley of the Sun.
The BEST part is when at one point....Madonna said....'PHOENIX....YOU'RE ALRIGHT!' That's when EVERYONE, the entire arena went NUTS! It was AMAZING. I think Madonna felt 'WELCOME' from the reception she received from us, Phoenicians....specially when Madonna has not visit AZ in 21 years. WELCOME BACK!
All in all....her last Phoenix and West Coast concert is the BEST and most memorable for me.
For those of you waiting for Madonna....be prepared....it's going to be HOT! ENJOY!
