Sunday 16 July - Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City
From denim32:
Madonna's performance at he Boardwalk Hall was amazing. When Madonna came out of the disco ball, she had a smile on her face, from ear-to-ear! After seeing that, it was a sign of what was yet to come! She was so happy during this show and laughed a lot.
There were a lot of highlights for me that night including: Future Lovers, Like A Virgin, Sorry, I Love New York and Ray Of Light (so much energy from Madonna and the crowd)!
One definite highlight is when one of Madonna's male dancers came out of nowhere and ran right past our aisle! He quickly touched my friend and ran up into the higher levels and started dancing! This is definitely Madonna's best tour so far! Enjoy the show!
From Erik:
Madonna was in prime form at the Atlantic City show and her dancers were wonderful too! I had a front row seat to the middle catwalk and how amazing it was when she emerged from the disco ball! The show was fabulous, of course, and she seemed very relaxed and had fun, laughing quite a few times!
Of course she did her routine just before Ray of Light to get everyone on their feet. She had to yell at a guy in a green shirt in the front row, saying 'You look like you want to order a drink, what do you think, you're at a bar?' People like that should never get to be in the front row. She kept telling the crowd 'You're not jumping!' during Ray of Light.
I saw her twice in NYC and the crowd tonight was way more subdued than in NY, which was ironic, because when she asked where everyone was from, NY got the loudest response. Like A Virgin, Sorry, and Hung Up were big crowd pleasers. But this audience was not as fun as MSG.
Madonna messed up the guitar intro to 'Paradise (Not For Me)' and told us she messed up and started over, with a laugh and some mumbled words to Isaac. It was great to see her so relaxed and having a laugh or two. And while I was not close enough to touch her hand, I did give her dancer a high five when he ran past my row just before the start of 'Hung Up'.
And speaking of 'Hung Up', she did not seem to have the audience sing for as long as she did with the NYC audiences. I loved the show, of course, but I thought this smaller venue was not as fun as the larger ones, but I am not sure if it was because of the size of the venue or the slightly less enthusiastic crowd. Having such a great seat was worth it - in addition to seeing the action so close, I got a few good photos!
From Fernando:
Last night in Atlantic City was a blast! Once again, Madonna put on a show full of fun, energy and a bit of sarcasm. She did state a couple of times that she was a bit disappointed with the crowd’s enthusiasm, but then again, it was Atlantic City.
She pointed a man out in the front row right before singing 'DROWNED WORLD' and asked him if he was okay or maybe wanted to order a drink since he didn’t seem to be having a good time. She stated that she was working her ass off and deserved a warm welcome. She added in jokingly, that she doesn’t even have an ass anymore because she was working so hard. She was very humourous but again very interactive with the crowd.
All in all, an amazing performance once again. Next stop, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN!
From James:
I'd been to 2 shows in NYC already, but was so excited about this show. HOWEVER, my boyfriend and I happened to sit in front of the BIGGEST ASSHOLE ever to attend a madonna concert in entire the history of her career.
We'd jumped to our feet at the beginning of the show, as did most people in our section....but this guy tapped my boyfriend's shoulder and asked him to sit down. My boyfriend mentioned it to me, and I was like, 'Hell no!' - so we ignored him.
As madonna segued into slower songs, most of our section sat. I remained standing, as she began to sing 'Live To Tell' - I was just swaying with the song, admiring my IDOL in all her glory....then, interrupted by a tug on my shoulder.
I turn around, and this asshole yells at me. 'Sit down!' I respond, 'NO!' and he STANDS up, and yells 'SIT DOWN, YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE! I'M GOING TO FUCKING HIT YOU!' so I say, 'GO AHEAD, DO IT!' and the fucker SWINGS at me. I dodge him, and then SCREAM for security, who's nowhere to be found. This man was drooling with rage, like fucking CUJO. then, people behind him start telling me to sit too. FUCK THIS. I grabbed our shit, and told my boyfriend to follow....and we stood the rest of the show in the aisle.
My boyfriend went to complain to security, but they told him to go find someone in a special uniform, blah, blah, blah....but we didn't want to miss anymore of the show than we already unfortunately had. SO, we danced our ass off in the aisle.
Madonna herself later in the show began to complain about people sitting down, and I BLEW UP with enthusiasm, CHEERING her on, and when she asked who these people were, I said, 'THEY'RE RIGHT OVER HERE!' those fuckers sat the whole damn show. If I had the chance to say anything to this man, I'd tell him 'If you want to sit on your TIRED ass, go to a goddamn Barbra Streisand concert, but this is MADONNA, MOTHER FUCKER! KISS MY ENTIRE ASS!'
I hope no one else has had such an interruption on this tour. You should have to fill out a form to get in, IF YOU'RE NOT A TRUE FAN, GET THE FUCK OUT!
From Jason:
The million dollar ball descended shortly after almost an hour-long wait. Madonna emerged in all equestrian fabulousity to her fans' delight.
This was the smallest venue of her tour (12,000 capacity) and it was packed with a frenzied crowd (half of which were probably New Yorkers) to the rafters.
She sent the house to dizzying heights of screaming perfection during the glam rock segment with 'I Love New York' and 'Ray Of Light' - may be aptly called the jumping-up-and-down segment.
Madonna clad in rock star galore jacket showcased her strumming prowess and never failed to impress. This manic response from the fans were later recalled during the Music/Disco Inferno mix.
During 'Let It will Be' Madonna borrowed a cowboy hat from one of the front row bitches. She was gyrating all over the middle ramp. She must've gotten really exhausetd in this routine. Her vocals were the weakest in this song. At times she sounded off and out of breathe, but she kept going....singing and almost saying....'Just watch me burn!' And so we did.
She had the chance to recover by sitting down and chatting with the crowd before singing 'Drowned World (Substitute for Rest....? I guess)' which she just needed at this point. She went on demanding in her cute diva-esque way for the front row bicthes to act like one. She claimed 'I've been working my ass off' and jokingly added 'I don't even have an ass anymore' followed by hearty laugh which was obviously contagious as it resonated around the house.
From Jeyan:
What an amazing concert! She radiated energy, making 12.000 people dance, jump and sing. I was at Floor 1 Row 11, four seats away from the catwalk. Almost half of the concert she was just in front of me! Although I have seen Madonna perform 14 times in the last 16 years, last night was the first time I was just next to her!
The highlights for me where my 30 seconds direct connection with Madonna! During Hung Up when she asked audience to sing along with her the 'time goes by so slowly' lines, and when she was right in front of me, I jumped on top of my seat (with my 1.84cm height), giving me direct eye level contact with Madonna. It was worth millions to look into her eyes, get a smile back and just get connected during that short period of time!
She was very talkative with the audience, telling us that it was her first time in Atlantic City, thus she needed a big round of applause. For the sitting audience, she said 'I work my ass off, now I do not even have an ass, so you better stand up and give some back to me.'
From John:
I was at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City last night. I have to say of all of the Madonna tours I have seen (the last 4) this was the most disappointing.
The music was good, her voice was great, her body was AMAZING, but, I really didn't see where it stood out like her previous tours. It was a good concert, no question, but it did not live up to my expectations of a 'Madonna Concert'.
Likes: very open to the audience/audience participation, bashing George W. (GREAT JOB WITH THAT), outfits, dancers, voice, stage, HER BODY! and Stuart - soo cute....
Dislikes: Erotica, substitute For Love, she did not keep it going, opening act was boring, not a grand entrance at all....
I still LOVE Madonna, but I have to say as a huge fan, I was disappointed.
From Kosta:
The show starts, people around me stand on their seats, I do the same, I am only 5'7" and can't see anything now. This goes on until 'Get Together', I guess security realized they need people to get down. I can't believe I was so close to her, she's so f*cking gorgeous, her skin is flawless and her eyes are beautiful, I get a little teary (I know, but way to excited).
In the catwalk seats are like the weirdest demographic, some are elderly and some are really young, which is great but they were sitting, yes sitting, next to the catwalk! I was dying! It was freaking hot, but they were just sitting, even when she was walking by them! When she was at the end of the catwalk, some weren't even trying to turn back! It was f*cking crazy! I think they may have been Casino comps or something.
Right before Let It Will be, this guy with a cowboy hat, passes everyone in my row, just goes next to the catwalk, she picks up his hat during the performance and returns it at the end, he then leaves. So is this part of the show now?
She goes off on the audience, on this guy with a green shirt, asks him if he would like a drink, it was hysterical....she asks people if they are from Atlantic City? Are they from Jersey? Are they from N.Y.? Denmark? People laugh, but you can tell she's a little irritated....why aren't they dancing....'show some appreciation....I'm working my ass of, and I don't even have one anymore.'
I jumped up and down during I Love New York and scraped my leg a million times on the chair. Some people on my row and the one in back of me left 1/2 way during the show.
OK so the moment comes that I realized I was annoyed to be part of this crowd, 'cause I swear M will never play A.C. again. During La Isla Bonita, she turns to her drummer, her hair is swinging it was really quick but she totally makes the shape of a gun with her right hand and puts it next to her right temple and pulls the trigger....I laughed and died at that moment realizing she was disappointed with this audience, but my girl just kept on smiling like the true performer she was.
The next indication was when she pushes two dancers onto the catwalk during La Isla Bonita, she mouthed to them 'kill me or shoot me'.... :( :( I hated being part of that audience.
At this point, I am just like I am not going like that....Lucky Star comes on, I am yelling my ass of and dancing. And the moment comes on for Hung Up, and I am just like, I don't give a shit I am standing on my seat....and I did and almost fell off my chair a few times from all the dancing and just watched, danced and enjoyed. The next moment made it all worth it.
The dancers lined up on the right catwalk (next to me) and the new back up singer....was directly across from me on the stage....I was the first person standing on my seat in front of her....people we standing behind me....and we made eye contact....she gave me a huge nod, kind of saying 'I see you' and I just mouthed I love you and blew her a kiss....and just kept rolling my arms to hung up and dancing....and we made eye contact a few more times and kept on smiling at each other....it was great!
From Richie:
Wow! This was my first Madonna concert and im still in shock! I've read all the reviews and seen most of the pictures from the tour and it was still so much better than I imagined it to be. At one point in the show she asked the crowd 'Why are you sitting down....what do you think this is a Bar Mitzvah?' and of course the crowd went wild.
And after Let It Will Be while she was sitting on the steps she still saw people sitting down in their seats near the front row and yelled at them 'You look like you're sitting at a bar....you need to get the sand out of your underpants! But, she seemed pleased with our singing during Hung Up at the end.
It was an awesome show but I have to say the best part was just looking at her knowing I wasn't watching her on TV, and knowing I wasn't looking at her pictures....It was really her right in front on my face! That was AMAZING!
From Troy:
Last night, I was fortunate to witness Madonna's Confession Tour for the second time. I saw her first show in Philadelphia last week with a group of friends and it was fantastic. Our seats for the Philly show were good, with a full view of the stage in the lower level at the back of the arena.
However, as much as I enjoyed the first show, I felt like I had missed something because I just NEEDED to see her face up close and could not do so from where I was sitting unless I was watching the screens.
So after the second show left Philadelphia on Thursday night, I just felt I HAD to be there and see her one more time on this tour, but it had to be up close. Lucky for me, I was able to score a single seat for the Atlantic City show in Section 122, Row A, which turned out to be a mere 15-20 feet from the right side platform catwalk! Let's just say I am eager to get those pictures developed!
Driving down to Atlantic City from Collingswood, New Jersey, all alone I became filled with emotion and tears of joy. Listening to the Confessions album and the Live album released from the Re-Invention Tour (which was my first Madonna Concert last year and recalling my memories both from last year and this past week overwhelmed me.
I remember thinking I have been a fan of Madonna since her first album came out and I was 8 years old in 1983, I couldn't believe that 2005 was the first time I ever saw her live for Re-Invention and vowed I would never miss a Madonna tour ever again.) I didn't care that I was going to the concert alone, I felt like this night was just between Madonna and me. I know it sounds corny but it was surreal, and the feeling was overwhelming.
When I arrived at Boardwalk Hall decked out in my custom-made Madonna shirt, complete with Swarovski crystals in the shape of the Disco Ball Logo from the Confessions album, black gloves with cut-out fingers, black cuff bracelets halfway up both arms, and black railroad hat (a la Justify My Love CD cover), I realized this crowd was going to be much different from the Philly crowd. I received a few compliments but nothing like the warmth and attention my friends and I received in Philly.
The crowd was comprised predominantly of: older 40-somethings, straight couples, younger Jersey-Girl trash and Casino-types. I felt the disapproving looks of the straight guys that were there with their women and even overheard 2 middle-age women saying, 'Some of these people are dressed like they're going to MEET Madonna' as I walked by. Where were my Gays and Drag Queens? At least I did see a few, and also noticed someone dressed as Madonna when she's on the cross for 'Live To Tell' complete with crown-of-thorns and all. WHATEVER. I wasn't here for these people anyway....
When I found my seat, I again felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb around the people I was sitting with and found more sneers and questionable looks cast in my direction. THANK GOODNESS for the Puerto Rican boy from New York sitting next to me. His name was Jaime and he was also alone, so we chatted while waiting for Madonna to come on (he had not yet seen the show and didin't know the set-list). We both said that we didn't care about the people around us, we were there for Madonna and would give her all of our energy.
Finally the lights came down and Madonna appeared on the screens: 'I'm Going to Tell You About Love....would you like to try?....come with me....' The Disco Ball opens and there she was....beautiful as ever. I am so glad she opened with 'Future Lovers', when I purchased the album on the day it was released last year, November 15th, (which coincidentally was my 30th Birthday), I remember saying, 'I hope I see Madonna perform this someday'. Looks like I got my wish in grand style.
Next up, 'Get Together', which is another song I feel a strong connection to. 'I can make you feel better....if it's bitter at the start, then it's sweeter in the end'.
'Like A Virgin' got the expected response from the crowd as Madonna rode the carousel horse in high-style.
'Jump' was far more impressive close-up, as it was hard to see the dancers and all of their exciting acrobatics from where I was sitting in Philly. I must say, although I liked this song when I first heard it, it's really grown on me as I've realized the message behind it has been the motto I've lived by my entire life. It's about not being afraid to take chances in your life, and realizing your own power as a person being self-sufficient and not depending on someone to make you complete. 'I can make it alone....'
Slowing things down a bit, 'Live To Tell' is powerful and very moving. I love that Madonna throughout her career takes her own music and adapts it, wrapping it around relevant humanitarian messages.
'Forbidden Love' very cool and innovative 'arm-dance' between two male dancers, again much easier to appreciate on this night being so much closer.
'Isaac' come out next, to begin the song bearing his namesake. I have loved this song on the album, but it was OFF THE HOOK in person and got a surprisingly enthusiastic response from this relatively sedate crowd.
Followed by 'Sorry', and now EVERYONE is standing again. This song is just infectious. You can't NOT dance when it comes on.
'Like It Or Not' comes next, with Madonna prancing up and down the catwalk, as usual lately, she takes a cowboy hat from (probably a stage hand), but this time did not throw it back in the audience. She hands it back to the same person.
Time for the 'Sorry Remix' with images of Madonna giving the finger and thumbing her nose, at world atrocities and all the horrific political figures past and present. The loudest jeers come with George Bush stupidly shaking his head like he's confused, the words: 'Don't Speak, Don't Talk' repeat over and over and culminate with 'The Audience Is Listening....' let's hope so Madonna.
ROCK ON! Madonna comes out with her guitar strapped on for 'I Love New York' which again gets a loud response, but considering the close proximity, that's not very surprising. When she finishes the song, Madonna says, 'I'm getting kind of pissed here, where do you think you are, a Bar Mitzvah?' I almost DIED when she said that because it was so true! She went on to say, 'I'm working my ass off up here! I want to see you jump for the next song! Everybody jump! Come on!'
And we did....'Ray of Light' ROCKS! She can do it all....seriously.
Madonna next does a version of 'Let It Will Be' that doesn't sound quite as good as the album, but given this song is all about her, and watching her move and dance....'JUST WATCH ME BURN!'....she DEFINITELY burns up the stage all on her own!
When the song is over she is sitting on the stairs and grabs a water bottle and drinks. She says, 'I still don't know if I'm happy with you guys, most of you are OK, but some of you....I don't know.' She then singles out a middle-aged man in a green shirt on her right side and says, 'Look at you leaning on my stage, you look like you're at a BAR. Can I get you a drink?' FABULOUS. That's exactly how you need to talk to this crowd.
She begins 'Drowned World', which you can tell is such a meaningful song for her. When she did this in Philly earlier this week I cried. It's BEAUTIFUL. 'Should I wait for you....my substitute for Love....'
At this time, she then introduces her friend Isaac who came back for vocals on 'Drowned World' and sings a duet version of 'Paradise (Not For Me)'. She then begins the song, and then stops. She says: 'Oops, I messed up'. The she starts again. It was SO CUTE and such an innocent moment.
At this point I am realizing that MANY people are getting up from their seats and heading up the aisle for refreshments, and all I can think of is the 'I'm Gonna Tell You A Secret' Documentary when she is having a pre-show pow-wow with her dancers and says: 'I'm not gonna get upset when I sing a ballad and people get up for hot dogs....I'm just gonna channel light....and fuck their hot dogs.'
At the same time, I am absolutely moved because my neighbor Jaime is visibly shaken by this song, and begins shouting, 'Te Amo, Te Amo!' and grabs my knee and clenches it. Clearly, this song must have special meaning for him. I was touched by this gesture and gently put my hand over his, it was just a beautiful moment. What's ironic is this song is one of the very few by Madonna that never meant much to me, and now it forever will. It just goes to show that all of Madonna's fans have different connections (some stronger than others) to her hundreds of songs.
The concert has been wonderful thus far, but the last set begins and it is truly the best of the entire show. 'Music/Inferno' was AWESOME! I am AMAZED at how well The Trammps 'Disco Inferno' melds with and works together with 'Music'. Of course Madonna is amazing with her John Travolta-esque white pantsuit and 'Saturday Night Fever' dance steps.
'La Isla Bonita' is another delightful mix, it's funny, Madonna seems to include this on almost every tour she does, and every time it's a little different.
OK HERE IT IS....if I came to see one song again, this was it - 'Erotica/You Thrill Me'. UNBELIEVABLE. I have always had a special place in my heart for this period of Madonna's career, and was so glad when I first heard that this song would be included in the tour. It makes me so happy that Madonna remembers this part of her life and takes it, re-invents it, and re-delivers it to the masses of people that rejected her during this time because of it. YOU FUCKING GO MADONNA!
When I heard this the first time around in Philly, I felt like I needed to at the VERY LEAST experience this one song again. The choreography with it was beautiful and erotic, but elegant, and at the same time not as gritty as the old 'Erotica', which reflects who she has become as a person...but still not forgetting the past. I screamed: 'I LOVE YOU DITA!' I hope she heard me. Madonna - if you ever see this, please treat us all to a re-release of this version of the song. It is a treasure.
The nights final songs were 'Lucky Star/Hung Up' - which of course had the crowd on it's feet again and were fantastic. She had us singing 'Time Goes By....so slowly....' over and over again complete with rolling our arms....until the end. And then it was over. I looked over at my neighbor Jaime and we hugged and told each other what a nice time we had with each other, it was such an awesome concert and to share it with a complete stranger that shares your passion made it even more wonderful.
I now feel like I have fully enjoyed the show to it's extent after seeing it twice. I am satisfied. Madonna - I hope you will release the entire last set as new mixes or perhaps do another live concert CD with the full concert DVD as you did for 'I'm Going To Tell You A Secret'.
Truly Madonna, from the bottom of my heart, I thank-you. - 'You Thrill Me'.
