2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Press Release
Posted: 28 September 2007

Here is some more news on Madonna's nomination for induction into the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, from the official press release:

The nominations for 2008 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have been announced today.
The nine nominees are: Afrika Bambaataa, Beastie Boys, Chic, Leonard Cohen, The Dave Clark Five, Madonna, John Mellencamp, Donna Summer and The Ventures.
Ballots with these nominees will be sent to over 500 voters who will choose the acts for inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for this year.
Five new inductees will be honored at the annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 10, 2008 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
To be eligible for nomination into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an act must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. This year's nominees had to release their first single no later than 1982.
Doors opened wide for Madonna Louise Ciccone in 1982, after five years as a singer and dancer on New York City's competitive club circuit. She signed with Sire Records (her label for the next 14 years) where her idiosyncratic persona exploded onto turntables, dance floors and airwaves and captured the imagination of the first generation of MTV viewers.
She went on to become the top female star of the 1980s with seven #1 hits, three #1 albums and seventeen top ten hits in that decade. In addition to molding her public image, Madonna is a meticulous studio craftsperson and completely uninhibited stage performer. From her first #1, 1984's 'Like A Virgin' (produced by Nile Rogers of Chic) to her most recent two year Confessions campaign, Madonna remains one of the most ferociously original artists in music today.

The Five new members to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be announced in January, 2008, and the induction ceremony will take place on March 10, 2008. All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is a non-profit organization that exists to educate visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music, carring out this mission both through its operation of a world-class museum that collects, preserves, exhibits and interprets this art form and through its library and archives as well as its educational programs.

Sandra Bernhard: Fling with Madonna was fake
Posted: 26 September 2007 - From contactmusic.com

Actress-comedienne Sandra Bernhard has finally come clean about her alleged love affair with Madonna - it was all made up. The pair became friends in the late 1980s and their increasing closeness sparked rumours of something more. But despite being purely platonic, the 52-year-old Roseanne star - who 'came out' as a lesbian several years ago - enjoyed every minute of the speculation.
She says, 'I don't mind being asked about Madonna. It was awesome at the time. We had a really funny friendship and kind of played with the press and the media. It was before the internet and there was still a little bit of allure and excitement and fun to it.'

Madonna awaits adoption decision
Posted: 25 September 2007 - From ITV.com

Malawian officials say it is still too early to say if superstar Madonna will be given full custody of toddler David Banda.
The little boy has been living with the singer and husband Guy Ritchie for nearly a year.
Meanwhile, there is growing speculation that the star is planning to adopt another orphan from the country - a 13-month-old girl called Mercy, whose mum died five days after giving birth.
A Malawian government official from the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare visited the singer at her home in central London.
Maxwell Matewere, executive director for the leading Malawi child advocacy group The Eye of the Child, said: 'What we think could happen is that the guardian Ad Litem, who is the Ministry of Women and Child Development...would present the report to the court so that the court could use that report to determine whether Madonna could be granted the final order.'
Mr Matewere stressed the final decision could only be given by the courts and the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare could not dictate or work independently from the court.

Madonna meets with Shimon Peres
Posted: 16 September 2007 - From AP Via Yahoo! News

Madonna toasted the Jewish new year with Israeli President Shimon Peres and declared herself an 'ambassador for Judaism,' local newspapers reported Sunday.
The singer, who is not Jewish, arrived in Israel Wednesday on the eve of Jewish new year to attend a conference on Kabbalah or Jewish mysticism.
Madonna met Peres at his official Jerusalem residence on Saturday evening and the two exchanged gifts, with Madonna receiving a lavishly bound copy of the Old Testament.
She gave Peres a volume of 'The Book of Splendor,' the guiding text of Kabbalah, inscribed 'To Shimon Peres, the man I admire and love, Madonna,' the Yediot Ahronot daily reported.
A Peres aide confirmed the meeting but had no details.
'You don't know how popular the Book of Splendor is among Hollywood actors,' Yediot quoted Madonna as telling Peres. 'Everyone I meet talks to me only about that. I am an ambassador for Judaism.'
Madonna, who was raised a Roman Catholic, has taken the Hebrew name Esther, and has been seen wearing a red thread on her wrist in a Jewish tradition to ward off the evil eye.
During her visit, Madonna plans to visit sites sacred to Kabbalists. It was not known how long she intends to stay.
Madonna paid her first visit to Israel three years ago on another Kabbalah-centered trip.
'I can't believe that I'm celebrating the new year with you in Israel,' Maariv newspaper quoted her as telling Peres on Saturday. 'It's a dream come true.'

More on the Mercy adoption rumours
Posted: 16 September 2007 - From The Mail On Sunday - thanks to Margit

This little African girl whose mischievous eyes and sparkling smile are said to have won Madonna's heart.
But last night the star's alleged plans to adopt 20-month-old Mercy James – a child she calls her 'smiling angel' – were shrouded in mystery and confusion.
According to recent reports, officials in Malawi had given the 49-year-old singer the go-ahead to adopt Mercy before she had finalised the adoption of two-year-old David Banda, also from Malawi.
The little girl even spent a mystery two weeks away from her orphanage last year, shortly after the children there were visited by Madonna.
The star and her husband Guy Ritchie are apparently still awaiting a visit from a Malawian inspector to London before David's adoption is finalised.
But so certain was Madonna that Mercy was the little sister she wanted for David that she had apparently instructed her Malawian lawyer to 'cover all legal bases' so she could collect the child from the Kondanani Children's Village, near Blantyre, next April.
Yet an investigation by The Mail on Sunday has found that while Madonna seems to have expressed interest in Mercy, whose 18-year-old mother died just five days after her birth, the authorities appear unaware of her plans.
Malawi's Director of Child Welfare, Penston Kilembe, insisted he had not had dealings with Madonna's representatives about a second adoption.
The director of Mercy's orphanage, Annie Chikhwaza, was coy when asked if Madonna expressed interest in the child. She denies that only months ago the orphanage asked Mercy's family to let a mystery foreigner adopt her.
Mrs Chikhwaza gave this newspaper a tour of the home for 125 children, most of whom have lost parents to AIDS.
When asked about Madonna, she said: 'I'm not at liberty to talk about that.'
Yet staff are convinced Madonna has had Mercy in her sights since a visit last October. Staff believe Mercy was taken to the capital Lilongwe at the same time as Madonna was staying nearby.
A source said: 'The rumour was white people wanted to 'buy her' and she'd been taken to see them.'
Mercy's grandmother, 63-year-old Lucy Chekechiwa Phiri, known as Anaphiri, said two white women from Kondanani came with an urgent proposal.
She said: 'They told me some foreigners wanted to take her away to give her a decent education.'
Mercy's uncle, Peter Banet, 34, added: 'They said they had come to see me because I might have heard there was a singer called Madonna who adopted a Malawian child. They said they had come to ask whether we would agree to have our child taken by someone in the same way. They didn't say the name of the person.'
Mercy was put in the orphanage when her mother, Mwandida Maunde, died. Her father was a schoolboy. Anaphiri says she tries to visit regularly but cannot always afford the £2 taxi fare. Yet Mrs Chikhwaza said: 'The family have nothing to do with her.'
As for the adoption plan, Anaphiri said: 'The family agreed we should say no.'
Mercy's uncle Peter added: 'We only took her to an orphanage because she needed breast-feeding. When Mercy is no longer a baby we want her back'.

Madonna at Kabbalah conference in Israel
Posted: 14 September 2007 - From AP Via Yahoo! News

Clapping and singing, Madonna joined in a Kabbalah conference Friday in Tel Aviv to celebrate the Jewish New Year.
Madonna was singing Jewish songs with the crowd of hundreds at the David Intercontinental Hotel, site of the conference on Jewish mysticism. At one point she pressed another participant — apparently a friend of hers — up to the front where he danced excitedly, making the singer and the crowd giggle and clap enthusiastically.
The 49-year-old pop star wore a black jacket with elbow-length sleeves that was held at the waist with a belt with a large buckle. She also donned a baseball-type, red-and-black plaid hat with her hair in a ponytail.
Madonna, who is on a private visit to the Holy Land, arrived Wednesday night. She didn't speak to the media, and the conference was closed to TV cameras.

Madonna invited to Flight Share
Posted: 14 September 2007 - From PR Newswire

Madonna and the Prince of Wales are two of an estimated 3000 select people who are being invited to join the world's first private flight sharing club in an effort to reduce the environmental impact and cost of private jets that are currently flying empty 40% of the time.
The Flightshare Private Members Guild is the brainchild of Farnborough UK based David Lacy, an aviation veteran of 26 years who was the first to introduce carbon offsets to the European private jet industry last year.
Membership uniquely enables the sharing of private jet flights through access to the Guilds secure portal and private coordination service. The Guild is expected to support around 1500 members who, according to their invitation letter, will be 'encouraged to cooperate in a spirit of collective endeavour and demonstrate a real commitment to meeting their travel needs in a sustainable manner'.
Lacy stresses that this is a significant step forward from the recently maligned carbon offsetting schemes. Flightshare aims instead, to cut emissions at source.
David Lacy says: 'Sharing trips in this way will reduce much of the waste in the private jet industry by utilising empty seats and empty legs. It's a known fact that the world's private jets currently fly empty for 40% of the time, often with several aircraft flying to and from the same airports, on the same day and at very similar times; creating their own congestion and using up precious air traffic slots'.
'Major events in the entertainment, social, sporting and business calendar are frequent examples which create a 'honeypot' effect of private aircraft around airports. Additionally, we often find that people are simply travelling to the same area at the same time for general business or leisure purposes. We want to bring these people together where possible and save them time and money, but more importantly, to help create sustainability for the industry and the environment'.
Last year, in Europe alone, there were 710,000 private flights. An estimated 250,000 of these were empty positioning flights with none of the seats occupied and of the remainder, most of these flew with a number of seats empty.
The Guilds main ethos is one of decorum and will draw its membership exclusively from a select group of high profile individuals: Royalty and senior diplomats; carefully selected celebrities, sports personalities and high net worth individuals; directors of FTSE 100 and 250 companies and directors of other large multinationals.

Madonna to arrive in Israel on Wednesday
Posted: 11 September 2007 - From AFP Via Yahoo! News

US pop diva Madonna and several other top Holywood celebrities who are fellow Kabbalah practitioners will visit Israel this week during the Jewish new year celebrations.
Madonna, who visited Israel in 2004, is due to arrive on Wednesday, said Assaf Levi, a spokesman for a Kabbalah centre in Tel Aviv which is sponsoring the visit said on Tuesday.
On Thursday she will be joined by US actors Ashton Kutcher, his wife Demi Moore, Rosie O'Donnell, and clothing designer Donna Karan, Levi told AFP.
The celebrities will all be staying at an upscale seaside hotel in Tel Aviv, he said, but declined to release details of their visit.
The ancient Jewish mystical tradition of Kabbalah has in recent years attracted a number of celebrities.
Madonna turned to it in 1997 after coming into contact with a Los Angeles-based Kabbalah centre that teaches an eclectic mix of Orthodox Jewish tradition, visualisation and positive thinking aimed at spiritual well-being.
In 2004 she took the Hebrew name Esther and is now reportedly observing the Jewish sabbath, although she has not converted to Judaism.
Madonna made a previous visit to Israel three years ago at the height of the Palestinian intifada, telling reporters at the time that she was more worried about paparazzi than suicide bombers.

Bloc Party threw out Madge at Earth gig
Posted: 11 September 2007 - From Digital Spy

Bloc Party had Madonna thrown out of their dressing room by security at this summer's Live Earth concert, say reports.
The band's singer Kele Okereke claims that their tour manager didn't recognise the 'Papa Don't Preach' singer and called for security when she approached the band.
Okereke told dotmusic: 'When she came in, he alerted security and security dragged her out. In a headlock. It was really surreal, and everyone stopped speaking.'
'And all we could hear is Madonna cursing and saying she's gonna kill these guys. She's really tough because of all that Pilates that she does, so she got out of the headlock quite easily.'

Pop star Madonna has been visited by a child welfare official from Malawi to assess whether she should be allowed to adopt a child from the African country. Simon Chisale was seen leaving the singer's home in London, but refused to comment to waiting reporters.
Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, were granted an 18-month interim custody order of David Banda, then 13 months old, last October.
Mr Chisale is due to file a report on their suitability as adoptive parents.
The interim custody order could be revoked if officials believed David had been treated differently from the couple's other children - 10-year-old Lourdes and Rocco, who is six - or if they felt the toddler's rights were being violated.
The adoption will only receive final approval when Malawi's authorities are satisfied that the child is being properly cared for.
Mr Chisale's visit comes after another Malawian official was removed from the case for allegedly taking money from the singer.
On Monday, a top civil servant in the ministry responsible for child welfare, Adrina Mchiela, stated that Madonna had been funding a member of ministry staff.
The singer was said to have paid for tuition and living expenses whilst an employee was studying in Britain.
But Madonna has denied using her celebrity status to evade Malawian laws during the adoption process.
Her spokeswoman stated there had been 'absolutely no interference' with government officials and 'no use of Madonna's 'celebrity'' to speed up the adoption process.
And Madonna's lawyer in Malawi said he was co-operating with Mr Chisale.

Madonna pays a visit to Bloc Party
Posted: 06 September 2007 - From metromix/chicagotribune.com - thanks to Margit

Of all the Brits singing about the meaning behind a night out - among them Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys - Bloc Party is the only act that sounds completely serious about it.
The jittery, danceable indie-rock quartet scored a hit with its debut, 'Silent Alarm,' and has another winner on its hands with 'A Weekend in the City,' a less fun but equally exciting (and more sophisticated) meditation on the pitfalls of modern living. The band kicks off its most recent North American tour, appropriately, at this weekend's Hideout Block Party, which also features Andrew Bird, The Frames and others.
While walking toward his home in East London, singer Kele Okereke told us about Bloc Party's progress, an unforgettable celebrity run-in and his own 'ample booty.'
What surprised you most about playing at Live Earth 2007?
Madonna coming into our dressing room because she's a super-huge fan. Our tour manager is this guy from Scotland that doesn't know much about popular culture and popular music. So when she came in, he alerted security and security dragged her out. They had her head in a headlock, and they were putting her out of the dressing room. It was really surreal, and everyone stopped speaking. And the only thing we could hear is Madonna cursing and saying she's gonna kill these guys.
Did you say Madonna was in a headlock?
Yeah. She's really tough because of all that pilates that she does. She [got out] of the headlock quite easily. And some of her people came along and told the security guards off, but she was so pissed off at that point that [when] I went to tell her that I was a huge fan of hers she completely freaked out and told me to get the hell away from her. And that was all in the space of like 10 minutes backstage at Live Earth.
Maybe you should dress up as her on stage to make things right.
You know, if she asks. I'm pretty sure if she didn't ask she'd be completely pissed off, and she'd completely freak out. I've already seen that she has a temper on her. To be honest, I don't feel like putting myself in the situation because I'm quite a skinny guy compared to the two security guards.

Lily Allen heckles Madonna at awards show

Lily Allen was in a boisterous mood at the GQ Men Of The Year Awards last night - she heckled Madonna as she presented a gong.
Madge, 49, made a surprise appearance to present interior designer pal David Collins with the Inspiration Award.
But loudmouth Lily, 22, couldn't stop talking throughout Madonna's 6-minute speech.
'Lily was being rude and loud, she was chatting all of the way through and it was painfully obvious,' an onlooker tells the Daily Mail.
'At first nobody noticed but then it was evident what she was doing - even Madge gave her a look.'
Lily was then reportedly ordered to go home by her label bosses.
'It was felt best that she left there before any real trouble started,' adds the source.

Madonna and Elton kiss and make up
Posted: 05 September 2007 - From contactmusic.com

Pop legends Sir Elton John and Madonna have finally called a truce on their bitter three year feud. The row erupted after the bespectacled singer publicly accused the Material Girl of lip-synching on her tours during a foul mouthed outburst at a London awards ceremony in 2004. He denounced Madonna's Reinvention tour at the Q Awards, declaring, 'Madonna, best f**king live act? F**k off. Since when has lip-synching been live? That's me off her f**king Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No.'
But the superstars put an end to the fall out with an onstage embrace at Wednesday's GQ Men of the Year Awards, which John was hosting. He introduced Madonna by declaring their row was over: 'This is a moment you thought you would you would never see.' But John couldn't resist one last jibe, revealing that after their dispute he had 'written a grovelling apology and offered to join the Kabbalah'.

Adoption statement from Liz Rosenberg
Posted: 05 September 2007

The plans to finalize the adoption of Madonna and Guy Ritchie's son, David, are proceeding as outlined almost a year ago - the day the Malawian Government granted them their 'interim' adoption. There has been absolutely no interference with Government Officials or use of Madonna's 'celebrity' to speed up this adoption as reported. All appropriate legal requirements are being followed, including a home visit. Madonna and her entire family look forward to being granted the final adoption early next year - 18 months following the original interim adoption order.

Madonna adoption worker replaced
Posted: 04 September 2007 - From BBC News

The Malawian social worker assigned to assess Madonna's suitability to adopt a child from the African country has been removed from the case.
Penstone Kilembe was due to visit the pop star in London this week to assess toddler David Banda's progress.
But he has been replaced by welfare officer Simon Chisale after court action by the Malawian government.
It is unclear if his removal is linked to claims he obtained cash and an air ticket from Madonna without approval.
Mr Chisale is expected in London on Tuesday to carry out the assessment.
Mr Kilembe, who returned to Malawi on Monday after attending a conference in the US, said he had not heard of the move and denied any wrongdoing.
'I am not aware of these developments. I have just arrived from New York and nobody from my office has told me anything. I will be in the office tomorrow,' he said.
Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, were granted an 18-month interim custody order of David, then 13 months old, in October 2006.
In an affidavit presented to the court, child welfare officials said Mr Kilembe was leaving the ministry and 'moving on to a new posting', but did not go into detail.
Mr Chisale, the country's chief social welfare officer, confirmed he had been appointed to replace Mr Kilembe but refused to discuss the adoption further.
Madonna's lawyer in Malawi said he was co-operating with Mr Chisale.
A further inspection has been scheduled for December, and a report is expected to be filed before the courts by February 2008.
A judge will then decide whether the Madonna and her husband are suitable adoptive parents.
Their custody order could be revoked if it is found that David was being treated differently from their other children, Lourdes, 10, and Rocco, six, or if the toddler's rights were being violated in any way.
