The World's Most Powerful Celebrity: Madonna Vs Oprah
Posted: 26 November 2003 - From BBC.co.uk

Here is more information on the BBC2 program The World's Most Powerful Celebrity presented by Alvin Hall which is screened on Thursday 27 November at 9.50pm.

They influence our lives. They reflect and define our culture. But how do they do it&'63; What factors create and, perhaps more importantly, sustain celebrity?
How did Madonna conquer the world of pop music: And why is Oprah Winfrey the queen of the TV chat show:
'Madonna was willing to do whatever she had to do to become a star'. That's what Madonna's first agent, Camille Barbone told me. Camille didn't find Madonna; Madonna found her. She hired her for a year, learned what she needed from her, and then sacked her.
Madonna's first agent Camille wasn't the only person Madonna cast aside. Driven, utterly ambitious and fearless - these are the qualities Madonna used to become a celebrity.
I learned by speaking to some of the people close to her, how they felt she used them on her way to the top.
But is Madonna the World's Most Powerful celebrity. Or is it Oprah? That's the subject of the first of my programmes.
Madonna has the power of celebrity and she has used it. She told her record company she wanted her own label. And she got it. She was one of the first celebrities to get involved with Aids organizations.
Both she and Oprah, just by mentioning a product - be it a beer or a book - on a TV show, can have a massive impact on its sales.
But I found a limit to Madonna's power. She exists because of her fans. She may want privacy, but she always has to give something of herself away to hold their imaginations. Does Oprah have to do the same?
So, who's more powerful - Oprah or Madonna? It wasn't an easy choice. Watch my programme and see what I found to be the real definition of power in celebrity and to see which one I chose as the world's most powerful celebrity.

Madonna's mother-in-law nearly spills the beans....
Posted: 21 November 2003

Madonna's mother-in-law (and Guy's Stepmother) Shireen Ritchie appeared on the UK TV Channel 4 reality show The Salon this week.
While having her hair cut and re-styled the salon staff - mainly the stylist John - questioned her about her famous stepson and daughter-in-law. You certainly got the feeling that she was being careful about what she said....especially when she was questioned about Madonna and Guy's wedding!

JOHN: Do you like her?
SHIREEN: Yes! (laughs)
JOHN: Come on give us the gossip....So do you see Madonna a lot?
SHIREEN: Well they live in London, New York and LA so they are dividing their life between these places. I see them a bit when they are in London though. But they have to spend time in the States for business.
JOHN: It must be awful with all that moving around.
SHIREEN: Well it is more difficult for my husband as he doesn't get to see his grandson Rocco so much. But we see a lot of Rocco when they are in the London area.
JOHN: So obviously you went to the wedding then? How was it? Lovely?
SHIREEN: It was beautiful yes, sensational. (starts to look nervous)
JOHN: What did her dress look like?
SHIREEN: Yes lovely, beautiful. Long time ago it seems now. Three years.
JOHN: I've got today as she has got older she has become more beautiful. You know like Princess Diana, as she got older she looked more stunnning.

Madonna's behaviour was Taboo on Broadway
Posted: 21 November 2003 - From Popdirt.com

The New York Daily News reports that following Madonna's visit to the premiere of 'Taboo' at the Plymouth Theater, the singer has come under fire.
'She talked all the way through it,' moaned a source. Another theatergoer had to ask her to be quiet. After the warning, Madonna 'stayed quiet for about 10 minutes' before resuming her conversation, the source said.
'If that wasn't enough, then the cell phone of someone she was with went off.'

Madonna the cheeky cheerleader - former teacher speaks
Posted: 19 November 2003 - From OK! magazine

A new BBC2 documentary series, The World's Most Powerful Celebrity features a profile of Madonna on it's first show. One of Madonna's former teachers, Karen Craven, is interviewed. Here is some of the things she had to say:

One of Madonna's old teacher, Karen Craven, reveals how attention-grabbing Madonna gave onlookers a real eyeful at a cheerleading match at their school in Detroit, Michigan.
'We were building up a pyramid,' says Karen. 'The girls had to run up, jump on the trampoline, vault and then flip onto the top of the pyramid.'
'When Madonna did her little flip and got up there, it turned out she had nude tights on, and it looked like she wasn't wearing anything under her skirt. I was shocked at first, and the basketball coach was really upset.'
But it wasn't just her saucy side that shone through in her schooldays. Karen reveals that Madonna also stood out as a born performer.
'She used to come into our office before class,' she explains. 'We'd put on the music and make her dance and entertain us, as well as everyone else in the locker room.'
As well as these natural showgirl instincts, the future superstar also displayed the kind of drive and determination in the classroom that would help to make her one of the most successful artists of all time on the global stage.
'Madonna was a determined grade A student,' explains Karen. 'I don't want to say she was a nerdy kid, but she was more along that sort of line than a trouble-maker.'

The World's Most Powerful Celebrity profile of Madonna is screened on BBC2 at 9.50-10.30pm on Thursday 27 November (Oprah Winfrey will also be profiled in this screening).

Madonna is living in a political world
Posted: 18 November 2003

From MSNBC News:
Madonna may be living in the U.K., but that doesn’t mean she’s keeping out of U.S. politics. A source says that the performer held a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Wesley Clark in her Los Angeles home on Sunday night.
'They met and talked issues,' says this source. 'She's very impressed with his intelligence and his vision for America.'
Madonna’s rep didn’t return calls for comment and a spokeswoman for Clark said only that the visit was 'not public' and thus there was 'no information' on it.
'Hey, don’t underestimate this,' reports another insider. 'Madonna is often ahead of the curve.'
And this means Clark has locked up the same gender-smooching, children’s-book author, Kabbalah-preaching vote.

Love Profusion video details - and a fairy godmother!
Posted: 17 November 2003

From MTV.com:
Despite residing in the U.K., Madonna's not ready to bail on her American Life just yet.
Remixed and Revisited, a seven-song EP due November 25, features four reworked songs from her latest album. They include the live medley of 'Like a Virgin' and 'Hollywood' she performed with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, the fleshed-out ditty that serves as the music for her Gap commercial, and one previously unreleased song, 'Your Honesty'.
'It's just a way to keep my record going, to keep it alive,' she said. 'And also because we did so many great remixes of all the songs on my album, I want people to be able to hear them. And I had a few oldies but goodies that people hadn't heard before, and I wanted to stick those on.'
Although Jason Nevins' remix of 'Nothing Fails' has been chosen as the EP's first radio single, a video for the Headcleanr rock mix of 'Love Profusion,' another American Life track, was shot earlier this month by director Luc Besson, who also helmed the Estée Lauder TV spots that feature the song. Although the queen of pop sings and dances throughout the clip, it won't look like any concert her fans have ever been to.
'There are a lot of special effects,' Madonna said of the clip. 'It's just one long performance video. I talked to things that weren't there - which is what you do when you're doing green-screen or blue-screen stuff. There's going to be a lot of fairies dancing around me.'
'Isn't that exciting?' she added, laughing. 'I always have a lot of fairies dancing around me.'
'Your Honesty,' co-written and co-produced by Dallas Austin, was recorded during the sessions that spawned 1994's Bedtime Stories but was left off the album because Madonna already had an overabundance of songs. Although it was all but forgotten about until her manager yanked it from the vaults, she said it was still one of her favorites.
This was a busy year for Madonna, who dropped two records, collaborated with Britney Spears, filmed a Gap ad and penned a line of children's books, which she considers the highlight. And 2004 promises to keep her equally occupied.
Her Maverick Films will produce the film 'She Rocks,' starring Amanda Peet as a music journalist who changes a rock star's life with her story, and Madonna hopes her most successful book, 'The English Roses,' will become an animated feature, in which she'll lend her voice to the fairy godmother character. Three more children's books are also on the way, the first of which will be 'Yakov and the Seven Thieves.'
'Never in a million years (did I think) it would be as successful as it is,' she said of 'The English Roses,' 'and I feel incredibly blessed. I hope it continues.'

Time Warner and Madonna Are at Odds on Her Label
Posted: 17 November 2003

The New York Times published an interesting article on Time Warner and Madonna's record label Maverick.

After 20 years and billions of dollars in music sales, Madonna's relationship with Time Warner is showing signs of strain over the future of her label, Maverick Records, with other negotiations just ahead on the value of Time Warner stock options she has received.
Maverick, whose artists include Alanis Morissette and Michelle Branch, is one of the biggest successes among the dozens of joint ventures in recording - often called 'vanity labels' - that major music companies have created for their marquee stars over the last few decades.
But now, Madonna is locked in a dispute with the Warner Music division over whether Warner will continue to finance or buy out the Maverick label after their current partnership agreement expires at the end of next year, people involved in the discussions said last week.

Is Madonna in Belgium? NOT!
Posted: 16 November 2003

Following on from reports stated on radio station Studio Brussel that Madonna was in Belgium, here is the real story from Tom, a fan who rang the radio station to give them the true story....

On Friday the whole of Belgium was hysterical because of rumours that Madonna was here in Belgium!
Two days before I got a call from a friend that works in the hotel that "Madonna" was having dinner in.
So, I went to the hotal with my camera. I waited just for just 30 minutes for her to leave the hotel and there she was....A LOOKALIKE!!!
I didn't take any pictures of course, because IT WASN'T MADONNA! She even signed the hotel guestbook as Madonna!
Then yesterday I heard on the radio that Madonna was here! So I called the radio station, and got on air to tell them my story.
An hour after that Esko-Graphics announces on there website: 'Thanks for the free publicity.'

The carpark of the company is closed (and is usually open) and a big lighting truck is parked there. A person who works at the company next door said that there have been helicopters coming and going. She is rumoured to be staying at a hotel in Antwerp.

Madonna to Launch Toy Line Based on 'Roses' Book
Posted: 13 November 2003

From Yahoo! News:
A few years ago, if someone said Madonna (news - web sites) was selling toys, one would assume sex toys.
But that, darling, is so yesterday for the ever evolving diva-turned-movie-star-turned-GAP-spokeswoman-turned-children's-author whose publishing blitz in kids books has now paved the way for a new line of products based on her book, 'The English Roses.'
Madonna and merchandising company Signatures Network Inc on Wednesday announced a deal to develop dolls, apparel, accessories, cosmetics, stationery, room decor and back-to-school products aimed at the 'pre-tween' readers, aged 7 to 12, who made Madonna's book a hit.
'I'm excited about the opportunity to develop a range of beautiful products that will complement the book and continue to spread its positive messages to children,' Madonna said.
The 'Roses' products begin rolling out in early 2004.
'Madonna clearly knows how to captivate audiences and with 'The English Roses', she is reaching an entirely new generation on a global level,' said Dell Furano, chief executive of Signatures who is talking with Mattel Inc. about developing dolls based on the books' characters.
Signatures' deal relates only to 'The English Roses,' said Furano, who added that the 45-year-old mother of two has often rejected licensing and merchandising opportunities throughout the years.
'She has turned down many things over the years in terms of fashion, apparel, eyewear, fragrance....huge money deals,' he said, adding, 'She liked the idea of building 'The English Roses' franchise and children-based products. It's a separate part of her that she wanted to embrace.'

Madonna to star in movie version of her children's book
Posted: 12 November 2003

From Ananova:
Madonna has revealed she plans to star in a movie based on her debut children's novel The English Roses.
The 45-year-old singer confirmed her plans in an interview with US TV Extra's Jerry Penacoli.
Madonna hasn't so far revealed which character she would play in the story, based on the book about four girls who are jealous of their pretty and talented schoolmate Binah.
In The English Roses, a fairy godmother gives the girls a secret peek into Binah's home and they discover her mother has died and she has a miserable life living alone with her father.
The story echoes Madonna's own life. Her mother died of cancer when she was five years old.

Madonna on The Late Show With Letterman
Posted: 12 November 2003

From the Evening Standard:
Madonna has revealed how she kept her controversial kisses with rival pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera secret from her seven-year-old daughter Lourdes.
The 45-year-old mother of two shocked television audiences with the full on the lip embraces during a performance of her hit, Like a Virgin, at this year's MTV video awards.
But she claimed Lourdes, who joined her on stage dressed as a flower girl for the start of the song, did not witness the steamy clinch. 'As soon as she got off stage she was whisked away in a car and went home. So she doesn't know anything,' Madonna said.
The singer, who is married to British film director Guy Ritchie, insisted the kisses were just 'ironic, because I was playing the groom and I had two brides, so we were operating at many levels. It was like a passing on of the baton, so to speak.'
Madonna also revealed she wanted to send Lourdes to a convent school in Ireland, joking on American late-night television that she was keen for her to 'learn the finer points of needle point.'
The pop star, who once complained that her own childhood was 'very repressive, very catholic,' admitted she is strict with her own children, banning them from watching TV. Instead, they are permitted just one video or DVD each week 'as a treat.'
Madonna, who was yesterday promoting her children's book in a New Jersey school, also spoke about living in London.
She said that going to pubs with her husband is 'very fun' and that she enjoys pheasant shooting because 'you get to wear this fantastic three-piece tweed suit. That's the part I love best.'
Calling herself 'an Anglophile' she said one of the hardest things about living in Britain is that 'you drive on the wrong side of the road.'
And like every couple, she admitted have occasional tiff with Ritchie in the car. 'My husband almost killed me,' she said.

Madonna's appearance on Live With Regis And Kelly
Posted: 11 November 2003 - Thanks to X-Static Pro Guy

Madonna appeared on the US TV program Live With Regis And Kelly this morning.
She was promoting her new book Mr Peabody's Apples and said that she was going to read the book to a group of school children later this afternoon at Mountclair, New Jersey and she was very nervous.
She said she was shocked to read in the New York newspapers that Britney was going to buy Guy's old batchelor pad in London for $5 million dollars!
Madonna sighed when Regis asked about who's idea it was for the kiss with Britney and Christina at the MTV VMA's, as if to say she is bored with hearing that question all the time.
She said that in her house one of the house rules is that Lourdes and Rocco are to say 'strongly dislike' instead of hate.
Pink (who was also appearing on the show) was brought out and introduced to Madonna for the first time at the end of the interview, and Pink blushed and she was really nervous to meet her idol. Madonna then hugged and kissed Pink.

Mad Axe Min!
Posted: 09 November 2003

From The People:
Kylie Minogue has snubbed Madonna - by axeing the Queen Of Pop from her new album. Madge had penned Alone Again specially for the Aussie star's Body Language CD.
But Kylie didn't even bother to recording it for the pool of 25 songs to be considered for the collection.
Pop insiders reckon it's a massive two fingers especially as Kylie once admitted: 'I don't think Madonna has ever given a song to another artist.'
Madonna - who started a fashion craze two years ago when she sported a T-shirt with Kylie's name on it at an awards bash - penned the upbeat song with producer Rick Nowels.
However, Madonna could get her own back on Kylie as she releases a duet with Britney Spears - which is out tomorrow. Experts predict Me Against The Music could topple Kylie's Slow from the top of the singles chart after just one week.

Spending too much money? Blame it on Madonna!
Posted: 09 November 2003

From the Metro:
A survey by online bank Egg.com have found that many people are influenced to buy designer items that they have seen their favourite celebrity wear or use.
Madonna was voted third in the list of women who influence us in our spending - second place was Jennifer Aniston, first place was Catherine Zeta Jones.
Madonna who always seems to be photographed in Adidas tracksuits, wearing Puma Mostro trainers, carrying a Louis Vuitton bag certainly helped with sales of those items!

Madonna may sue over 'adoption' article
Posted: 07 November 2003

From MSNBC's Jeannette Walls:
Madonna’s rep says the singer will seek legal action over a false report that she’s looking to adopt a baby.
The British tabloid Now has a detailed article quoting alleged friends of Madonna - one by name - about how the 45-year-old singer hopes to adopt a daughter by spring.
'This is not true and if they did print it, they’re going to get sued,' Madonna’s spokeswoman told the Scoop. 'It’s so reckless.'

Madonna rejects Boy George's Taboo invitation
Posted: 07 November 2003

From the San Francisco Examiner:
Madonna reportedly turned down an invitation from her longtime pal Rosie O'Donnell to attend the New York premiere of Rosie's new show, 'Taboo,' a musical based on Boy George's pre-Culture Club years and the early '80s London club scene, because she's mad at George for making fun of her.
Apparently, the original London production of the show included a spoof of Madonna's 1990 hit 'Vogue.' When George received a letter from Mo's attorney insisting he remove the bit or else, he complied. But the always outspoken gender-bender was determined to have the last word. He told a reporter, 'I used to think (Madonna) was an icon but she's more of an eyesore to me now.'
A source on the set of Madonna's new video told Us Weekly that they overheard Mo telling Rosie that she wants nothing to do with Boy George or his stinkin' show.

Pink ponders Madonna kiss
Posted: 05 November 2003

From the Evening Standard:
Feisty chart star Pink says she would love to do a Britney and share a kiss with Madonna.
The US singer - in London to promote her third album Try This - admitted Madonna was one of her all-time favourite stars.
Britney Spears famously drew gasps from the crowd when she briefly snogged Madonna on stage at an MTV awards bash recently.
Pink said yesterday: 'I love Madonna. I'm a die-hard fan. She was my god when I was eight.'
'If Madonna came to me with her mouth open I wouldn't know what to do,' said the grinning singer.

Is Madonna set to adopt a baby?
Posted: 05 November 2003

As if the UK tabloid press isn't full enough of pregnancy rumours, Now magazine is starting adoption rumours....

She's made no secret of her longing for a third child - and now Madonna's friends say the 45-year-old, who's trying to conceive naturally, is looking at the possibility of adopting another child.
'Madonna let the news slip recently that she's adopting a baby girl,' says her friend Roz Barrett. 'She's been sharing the happy news with select friends for the last few weeks and if all goes well, she and Guy could have their new baby by next spring.'
Another pal of the pop star confirms: 'Madonna and Guy have been trying for months to do it naturally, but they've had no success so far. They won't wait around for a miracle, so the plan is to adopt a baby girl. They agree that another girl would be a perfect addition to their family.'
The friend explains: 'The time is right for another baby in the family now that Rocco is over the 'terrible twos'. Guy adores being a dad and would love nothing more than to add to his family. He couldn't care less whether the baby is biologically his or if they adopt one. These are people with really big hearts who only want to do the right thing.'
'Adoption is in line with all her Kabbalah teachings and that's really what's motivating her decision to adopt,' explains the friend. 'Kabbalah scholars teach that adoption is one of the most selfless, spiritually rewarding endeavours a person could ever go through.'
The couple has decided to look for a baby girl because 35-year-old Guy doesn't have a daughter of his own, even though his relationship with Lourdes - Madonna's seven-year-old daughter by fitness instructor Carlos Leon - is extremely close.
There is no word yet as to where the new addition to the Ritchie family will come from. 'It's doubtful Madonna will go to Asia to adopt, like Angelina Jolie did. She'd go for a baby from closer to home,' continues the friend.
'She doesn't care about the baby's ethnic background, either. All she wants is a healthy baby girl to love. Guy is behind her 100 per cent. They're really of one mind on this. They're doing this straight from the heart.'

Mr Peabody's Apples - Press Release Information
Posted: 04 November 2003

Here is the press release for Madonna's next children's book, Mr Peabody's Apples and the marketing campaign for it - including the chance to download Madonna’s narration of the entire text of Mr. Peabody’s Apples exclusively via Apple iTunes, Audible.com, and AOL.

Callaway Editions is delighted to announce the November 10, 2003, release of Madonna’s second book for children, Mr. Peabody’s Apples. Her first book, The English Roses, an international bestseller, debuted at No. 1 on the children’s picture book best-seller list of The New York Times, where it has remained for six consecutive weeks. The book has also been a bestseller in countries as diverse as England, France, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Taiwan, Brazil, Slovenia, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands.
Mr. Peabody’s Apples, a story about the power of words and the importance of teachers, is illustrated by Loren Long, a brilliant young newcomer to the world of children’s picture books. The book, written for readers aged six and up, is a 32-page jacketed hardcover.
Mr. Peabody’s Apples takes place in 1949 in Happville, USA. Mr. Peabody, the beloved elementary school teacher and baseball coach, one day finds himself ostracized when rumors about him spread through the small town. Mr. Peabody silences the gossip with an unforgettable and poignant lesson about how we must choose our words carefully to avoid causing harm to others.
Madonna dedicates Mr. Peabody’s Apples to teachers everywhere. 'This book was inspired by a nearly 300-year-old story that was told to me by my Kabbalah teacher,' she says. '. . . when I began to write books for children, I decided to share the essence of this story in one of them. . . . I hope I have done his story justice.'
Nicholas Callaway, publisher of Callaway Editions, says, 'Mr. Peabody’s Apples is further proof of Madonna’s extraordinary talent and range as a storyteller. Whereas The English Roses is set in London and concerns issues of jealousy and friendship among girls, Mr. Peabody’s Apples takes place in the American heartland and is all about boys, baseball, and the importance of listening to our teachers.
We think everyone will be pleasantly surprised to see how the two books differ in style of story and illustration. This gives an inkling of the wonderful surprises that Madonna has in store for us in the three books to come.'

The Illustrator
Peabody illustrator Loren Long lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, and paints in the tradition of American regionalists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Edward Hopper, and Grant Wood. 'I was amazed at how perfectly Madonna captured the world that most influences me,' Long says. 'I didn’t have to look far for inspiration.'

Marketing Campaign

A major marketing campaign will accompany the launch of Mr. Peabody’s Apples. AOL, Apple iTunes, and Audible.com are joining forces with Callaway for an innovative promotion. Listeners will be able to download Madonna’s narration of the entire text of Mr. Peabody’s Apples exclusively via Apple iTunes, Audible.com, and AOL.
Madonna will give a live interview on AOL and on KOL (Kids Online)’s popular children’s radio show on November 10, 2003. Throughout the week of November 3-10, AOL members will be invited to submit questions for that interview.
She is also scheduled to appear on such national television programs as The David Letterman Show and Live with Regis and Kelly on November 11, 2003.

The next book

Madonna's third children's book, Yakov and the Seven Thieves, will be released worldwide on April 26, 2004.

Britney: I only listen to Madonna
Posted: 04 November 2003

From IMDB.com:
Britney Spears refuses to take advice from anybody - except her new pal Madonna.
The 'Me Against The Music' singer, 21, became close friends with the 45- year-old pop icon after they shared a headline-grabbing kiss at August's MTV Video Music Awards. And Britney now admits nobody else's advice matters to her like Madonna's does.
She says, 'I don't listen to anybody. Nobody can tell me anything. I'm stubborn. If somebody tells me not to do something, I do it. But I do listen to Madonna. For some reason I listen to her. I know that sounds really silly. It's nice to have somebody just to ask questions to. She's a visual artist and a deep artist as well. I like the way she thinks. I wish I could be inside her head. I like Madonna's career, and what she's done with her family.'

Britney to buy Guy's batchelor pad?
Posted: 02 November 2003

From the Sunday Mirror:
One minute she is smooching Madonna, the next she is thinking of buying a house from her old man. Britney has been house-hunting in London and it seems that Guy Ritchie's old batchelor pad fits the bill.
The four-bedroom town house, just around the corner from Kensington Palace, comes with a £3 million price tag. 'I've been looking for somewhere cosy to hang out and Guy's old place sounds just perfect,' she says.
Britney is hoping to pick up a plummy British accent by spending more time over here.
'I'm getting better at the accent already. Madonna's accent is really cool.'

Madonna gets her kit on
Posted: 02 November 2003

From M Celebs magazine:
Just when we thought it was safe, Madonna has reignited her passion for all things Blighty.
Madonna's latest attempt to blend in was to organise a special screening of the England vs Turkey football match last month.
'Guy told her how important the match was and that she had to cheer on the boys with everyone else,' says a friend.
'Madonna was well up for it. She's watched football before and quite enjoyed it - although she was amazed how seriously people take it.'
