Amsterdam not to try Madonna for blasphemy
Posted: 29 January 2007 - From AFP Via Yahoo! News

Prosecutors in Amsterdam said they would not take action against the singer Madonna over charges of alleged blasphemy during a concert tour in which she underwent a mock crucifixion.
Young people belonging to the SGP, a small deeply conservative Protestant party, called for her to be prosecuted after she gave two concerts last September in Amsterdam during which she knelt and took off a crown of thorns while a crucifix was projected behind her.
'The pop singer Madonna will not be prosecuted for blasphemy and insulting faith,' the Amsterdam prosecutor's office said.
The so-called crucifixion scene 'can lend itself to different interpretations,' the office said.
'The prosecutor's office believes that through her show, the singer on all the evidence tried to express her frustrations about certain situations in the world....it is not a question of contempt for God.'
'Furthermore, Madonna did not discredit Christians as a group.'
The office said the plaintiffs could appeal.

Evita costumes up for auction
Posted: 29 January 2007 - From Bonhams Press Release

Several of Madonna's costumes from the 1997 film Evita are going up for auction in London on Tuesday 06 March.

A remarkable collection of costumes created and supplied by Angels The Costumiers, for some of the most iconic international film, television and theatre productions in history will be sold at Bonhams on Tuesday 6 March 2007, in what is believed to be the UK’s largest auction of film and television costumes.
More than 400 Angels outfits including Obi Wan’s Cloak (Star Wars, Alec Guinness £50,000-60,000) and James Bond’s Suits (e.g. Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan £4,000-5,000) will be available to collectors and amateur fans alike. Other lots in the Bonhams sale of Angels costumes include the most prominent costumes from films such as Braveheart, Titanic, Elizabeth, Indiana Jones, Highlander, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Evita and Superman.
In recognition of the popular appeal of the items, and a world first in terms of a viewing experience, Bonhams’ saleroom will be turned into a star’s dressing room – allowing interested customers the opportunity to try on selected costumes.

Several outfits worn by Madonna in the Eva Peron film biography, Evita (1997) are on auction including: a stone coloured coat, blouse and skirt (£500-700), a black silk patterned dress with a mint coloured and peach coloured slip (£400-500), a green coloured dressing gown, white satin and peach satin slip (£300-400) and a navy blue wool suit and blouse (£400-500).

I have been a Madonna fan since I was at school in the eighties. In 1987 I went to see the Who's that Girl? World Tour. I was hooked!
Now twenty years later, I've written a play called 'Madonna and Me'. It is to be staged at the Union Theatre in London and starts in April 2007. It will run for three weeks.
The play is set in Liverpool and it tells the story of three Madonna fans and their mates, and shows how a simple song and video can change a person's life. It centres around friendship and loyalty.

Madonna Says She's 'Absolutely Not' Retiring
Posted: 27 January 2007 - From People.com By Shruti Dhalwala - thanks to Eric

In recent months, Madonna has appeared in a world tour, released an album, voiced a role in a movie and begun the process of adopting an African child.
So when asked by reports at the London premiere of her latest film, Arthur and the Invisibles, if she planned to retire anytime soon, she responded with a smile – and a resounding: 'Absolutely not!'
But the singer, who voices a character in the animated Invisibles, showed that family is her top priority. Leaving 15-month old Malawian youngster David snoozing at home, Madonna, walked hand in hand with husband Guy Ritchie and kids Lourdes, 10, and Rocco, 6.
Madonna and Ritchie, who have shot down rumors of a rift in their marriage, got cozy together to pose for family pictures. Madonna, clad in a Dolce & Gabbana coat and knee-high Stella McCartney boots, also stopped to sign autographs for fans.
When asked by reporters what she had coming up next in her busy career, the multi-hyphenated star answered: 'H&M,' referring to her 'M by Madonna' line with the global fashion chain, which launches in stores worldwide March 25.
Also on deck for the singer is the release of her special edition CD/DVD The Confessions Tour on Jan. 29. The DVD, filmed during her eight-night stint at London's Wembley Arena last year, includes the controversial crucifixion scene that excluded from the NBC special that aired last November.

Madonna at fantasy movie premiere
Posted: 26 January 2007 - From BBC News

Madonna attended the premiere of her new film, Arthur and the Invisibles, in London's Leicester Square.
She was accompanied by her husband Guy Ritchie and children Lourdes and Rocco. Recently adopted David Banda was said to be at home sleeping.
Madonna provides the voice for one of the characters in the part-animated children's fantasy.
Director Luc Besson said it was his last film: 'I've been in this business for 30 years. It's a long time.'
Madonna, 48, voices the character of Princess Selenia in the new film.
She said: 'It was great fun. I got to voice the character while sitting there in my tracksuit.'
Asked what attracted her most to the character, she answered: 'I like how tough she is and that she knows how to use a sword.'
French director Besson joked about the UK's celebrity scene: 'You don't have [David] Beckham any more. You exchanged him for Madonna and you won, although she doesn't play football.'
Other arrivals last night included TV presenters Vanessa Feltz and Melinda Messenger.

Madonna's first ever TV appearance
Posted: 23 January 2007 - Thanks to Laurie and Steven

She's sold over 200 million albums worldwide, won seven grammy awards, and is the highest earning female singer of all time. But even Madonna had to start somewhere. In this exclusive WOW TV clip, Madonna is filmed during her first-ever live performance.
The clip is featured on the WOW TV No Entiendes channel, a large archive of filmed performances from legendary doorman and club promoter Haoui Montaug's talent shows at New York's Danceteria in the 1980s. There's no grand entrance from a giant mirrorball, just a shabby red curtain pulled to one side by Montaug. There's no tightly choreographed dance troupe, just three mismatched dancers who look like they rehearsed in someone's kitchen.
But there's no mistaking that Madonna, with her spunky persona, funky moves, and earnest voice, is already on her way to bigger and better things as she performs 'Everybody.' And just what is that glare we see the singer throw back at the dancers towards the end of the song? Is this clip also witness to the birth of Madonna the short-tempered diva?
WOW TV proudly presents the world premiere of Sire Recording artist Madonna, singing 'Everybody' at Haoui Montaug's No Entiendes (1982).

The clip can also be downloaded from this link at: wowtv.tv/madonna-1982

Fans needed for TV documentary
Posted: 22 January 2007

Owen Tooth, a researcher has asked madonnalicious visitors for help in the production of a new UK TV documentary:

I've been asked to help with the research for a new documentary for Current TV.
We're wondering if, when Madonna released 'Papa Don't Preach', any women used the song to help make up their minds about keeping babies and boyfriends they might otherwise not have.
If these fans exist, we'd love to interview them, and their children, to see their unique take on life.
On the surface it's just a great, fun idea but beneath that it's about the power music has over us all and how we look to our idols to guide us.

If any fans can help Owen then please email him at madonnasbabies@yahoo.co.uk or call him on (UK) 07949 382014.

Madonna makes Forbes Richest Women List
Posted: 19 January 2007 - Thanks to Micheal

Forbes magazine has just published the Top 20 Richest Women in Entertainment list. Madonna ranks at #4, with an conservative estimate net worth of $325 million.

Here's what Lea Goldman and Kirri Blakely of Forbes had to say:
'She could have easily disappeared into pop obscurity like other pop starlets, who came to fame via MTV during the 1980s. But Madonna's masterful manipulation of her image and the press. Combined with an astute business sense have crowned her as one of the most wealthiest and enduring acts.
While her albums don't sell the way they used to, her concerts still set attendance records all over the world, grossing $1 billion over the course of her 20 year career. The Material Girl's portfolio is also crammed with expensive items like contemporary art, real estate and a wardrobe of no small historical significance.'

Forbes list of the 20 Richest Women in Entertainment will be a one-hour special on the E! Network Saturday 20 January. Check your local listings for times.

Mirren admires Madonna's attitude to sex
Posted: 18 January 2007 - From contactmusic.com - thanks to Lee

Golden Globe winner Dame Helen Mirren finds Madonna's controversial 1992 Sex book inspirational - and admits she holds the star's outspoken sexual views in high regard.
Sixty-one-year-old Mirren, whose reputation for stripping off in films often obscured her acting ability, insists she hated having to play a certain type of 'sexy female' in the past - but admires Madonna's 'fantastic' and unique grasp of her sexual self.
She says, 'The thing that was imposed on me from the outside was crude and vulgar and distressful to me, and disturbing - that big t**s, blonde hair, Diana Dors, blowsy kind of thing. (But) I think Madonna got it right. Madonna claimed it for herself, and I've always admired her for that. I loved that Sex book she did. I thought it was fantastic, because it was a big two fingers up, 'This is my sexuality, it's not what you put on me, it's mine.'

Liz Rosenberg comments on New York car chase
Posted: 15 January 2007 - From New York Daily News / Jane H. Furse

Madonna was nearly chased off the road after her appearance on 'Late Show With David Letterman' last week and had to call the cops for help, according to an Internet gossip site.
Two vehicles reportedly were tailgating the Material Mom's car, and the pop star's chauffeur tried to elude them by turning onto Fifth Ave.
The pursuing drivers then tried to ram Madonna's car, forcing her to call 911, gossip blogger Perez Hilton claimed on perezhilton.com.
The NYPD could not confirm the emergency call, and Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, said she was unaware of the close call, which was reminiscent of Princess Diana's last moments.
Rosenberg did say the singer encountered 'a danger situation' directly outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, where she had told Letterman about her controversial adoption of an African orphan and Britney Spears' pantyless photo op.
The crushing crowd of 500 fans that surged toward her on Broadway 'was pretty scary,' Rosenberg said.
Rosenberg would not confirm whether Madonna or her entourage called for a police escort last week or in the past.
'I don't comment on her security,' she said.

Madonna gets panic attacks when taking time off
Posted: 14 January 2007 - From ANI / newKerala.com

Madonna calls her New Year holiday in the Indian Ocean a real landmark in her life, for even the thought of taking time off is otherwise enough to send her into panic attacks.
The Material Girl and her British director hubby Guy Ritchie whisked of their three kids, daughter Lourdes, and sons Rocco and David, to a small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean to bring in the New Year.
And for Madonna, that time away was one of the best moments of her life, for despite being a person who gets panic attacks whenever she goes on a vacation, she actually managed to enjoy this one.
'I don't take holidays very often, in fact I get panic attacks thinking about them, but I actually enjoyed this one,' Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.
As for what the 'Hung Up' singer liked the most, well she says spending some 'quiet' and quality time with her family without the interference of the press is what she's most grateful for.
'We actually celebrated New Year's in this very small island in the middle of the Indian Ocean with not many people....It was tropical, it was private, it was quiet. It was beautiful,' Madonna added.

Madonna has made a special guest appearance at the premiere of her new animated movie.
Arthur And The Invisibles, which is made by critically-acclaimed French film director Luc Besson - best known for Leon and The Fifth Element - follows a boy's journey to save his family home from real estate developers.
Madge, who premiered her movie for children from two New York schools, plays Princess Selenia a mysterious character who helps Arthur save his family home.
She said: 'I think she's (Princess Selenia) cool. What do I mean by cool? I think she's a perfect combination of being vulnerable and really strong.'
'I think she has a sense of humour yet she has a little bit of consciousness about herself. She loves her dad but she's also independent. She knows how to fight and she's got cool hair. What more could you ask for?'
Arthur and the Invisibles stars Mia Farrow and Freddie Highmore and features the voices of Jason Bateman, David Bowie, Robert De Niro, Emilio Estevez, Jimmy Fallon, Harvey Keitel, Chazz Palminteri, and Snoop Dogg.

Madonna adoption 'saved a life'
Posted: 12 January 2007 - From MSN UK News - thanks to Clare

Madonna said she was 'saving a life' when she initiated the adoption of Malawian boy David Banda. The singer also called for increased adoption from the African nation.
'There's over a million orphans in Malawi, and in my opinion the laws need to change because these children need to be rescued,' the Material Girl told David Letterman's Late Show on CBS.
Madonna, 48, said she had been warned that pursuing an adoption from the country could be difficult.
'My social worker....said, 'Good luck. You're going to be making it up as you go along',' the pop star recalled. 'She didn't say don't do it, but she just said expect challenges, and, boy, did we get them.'
Madonna and her British husband, film director Guy Ritchie, 38, have been allowed to take one-year-old David to their home in London. She has two other children, Lourdes, nine, and Rocco, six.
Yohane Banda surrendered his son to an orphanage after his wife died last year. The couple's two other sons died in infancy from malaria. Banda has said he wants David to stay with Madonna and Ritchie.
But human rights groups in Malawi have said they are concerned the government cut legal corners to fast-track the adoption and they want adoption laws there clarified. A November court ruling allowed a coalition of rights groups to monitor the process.
On the show, Letterman expressed support for the adoption. 'I found it a little upsetting that there was such a tumult and furore over this when in fact the net result was here we have a human being that now has a life,' he said.

Madonna defends her pal Rosie O'Donnell
Posted: 11 January 2007 - From the Associated Press

Rosie O'Donnell has a powerful ally in her feud with Donald Trump: her close friend Madonna.
'People are giving Rosie a hard time,' Madonna, who starred with O'Donnell in 1992's 'A League of Their Own,' said Thursday on NBC's 'Today' show. 'I wish they'd stop. I don't think it's fair.'
The 48-year-old pop star told 'Today' co-host Meredith Vieira that she'd first heard about the flare-up between O'Donnell and Trump while vacationing 'in the middle of the Indian Ocean' and quickly e-mailed O'Donnell.
'I have to hear it from the horse's mouth,' Madonna said. 'Basically, I mean, she's a stand-up comic. I think all stand-up comics talk about provocative things in their monologues before shows, and I think that's a commonplace thing.'
'I don't know exactly the content of what she said,' she continued, 'but I have a feeling that if every stand-up comic was penalized for saying politically incorrect things or provocative things, I think they'd all be hung in the public square.'
The Rosie-Donald feud began last month after Trump announced that Miss USA Tara Conner would keep her title, which had been in jeopardy because of underage drinking. He owns the pageant.
O'Donnell, the outspoken moderator of ABC's 'The View,' hit a nerve when she said the twice-divorced real-estate mogul had no right to be 'the moral compass for 20-year-olds in America.' Trump fired back, calling her a 'loser' and a 'fat pig' in various media interviews.
Madonna appeared on 'Today' to promote 'Arthur and the Invisibles,' a release by The Weinstein Co., slated to open Friday. Madonna, who voices the character of Princess Selenia, says playing a princess is 'new' for her - and her fans.
'They perceive me as a queen, not a princess,' she joked, adding: 'I just loved the idea of playing a character where I can create a fantasy world that has nothing to do with who I am, or what people associate with me.'

Fans can watch a streaming version of the interview online at msnbc.msn.com

Madonna nearly misses live interview
Posted: 11 January 2007 - From the Associated Press

The time had come for Madonna's first-ever live interview on N-B-C's 'Today' show, but where was she?
Everyone waited outside for her. Finally, Madonna got out of a black car. Meredith Vieira asked what took her so long and Madonna replied, 'Hair.'
Inside the studio, Madonna said that the reason she'd never done a live interview on 'Today' before was because she didn't like 'talking to people this early.'
She pulled herself together to plug her animated movie 'Arthur and the Invincibles' and to side with her friend Rosie O'Donnell in that feud with Donald Trump. Madonna says 'people are giving Rosie a hard time,' and she doesn't think it's fair.
Madonna also said she and Britney Spears have 'drifted apart,' joking, 'we shared a kiss and I never saw her again. You see, that's how it goes in my life.'

The highest-grossing tour ever by a female artist, 'The Confessions Tour - Live from London' DVD, first broadcast on NBC last November, includes songs that span the course of Madonna's extraordinary career. 'Like A Virgin,' 'Hung Up,' 'Erotica' and 'Music' are just a few of the hits that can be seen on the DVD and heard on the bonus CD included in the package as well as several songs from her 'Confessions On A Dance Floor' CD which debuted at No. 1 in 29 countries.

Madonna is scheduled to appear on tomorrow's (January 11th) airing of 'The Late Show with David Letterman,' make a live appearance on the 'Today' Show and 'Live with Regis and Kelly' - to promote the film, 'Arthur and The Invisibles' - and will also host a screening of the film in Tribecca.

The What You Waiting Fizor singer admits the two have much in common, including Italian-American heritage and British husbands. She tells the US edition of Elle magazine, 'It is weird that we have all of these similarities. Madonna's had us over for dinner and stuff, and she's always been very nice to me.'
Stefani admits the Hung Up singer seemed less-than-impressed when she first mentioned she was recording a solo album featuring dance tunes. She adds, 'I remember telling Madonna I was going to do an '80s dance record and she rolled her eyes, because I think when you've lived through it like she did, she's like, 'Whatever.' Angelina enters Madonna adoption row
Posted: 08 January 2007 - From ITV.com

In French magazine Gala Angelina Jolie both criticised and sympathised with Madonna's adoption of baby David Banda last year:

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has entered the Madonna adoption row, saying she would never have a child from Malawi.
The actress and mother-of-three, two of which are adopted, said in an interview that when she and her partner Brad Pitt adopt again, Africa will not be not on their list.
She said: 'It's a country where there is no real legal framework for adoption.'
'Personally, I prefer to stay on the right side of the law. I would never take a child away from a place where adoption is illegal.'
Despite her comments, Jolie did express some sympathy for the criticism Madge has received in the wake of her adoption of African child David Banda.
She added: 'I have been horrified by the attacks she's been subjected to. All that should count is the happiness of her little David.'

Malawi pleased with 'loving mother' Madonna
Posted: 05 January 2007 - From Reuters Via Yahoo! News

Malawi's government is happy with the way pop diva Madonna is looking after a one-year-old Malawian boy after her plans to adopt the child last year caused a storm of controversy, an official said on Friday.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Women and Child Welfare Adrina Mchiela told Reuters the government is satisfied so far at the way Madonna is looking after David Banda.
'We have been monitoring her and so far we see a loving mother in Madonna and David is very fine....the father should not be worried,' Mchiela said.
Yohane Banda, David's father, this week said he wanted to talk to Madonna and find out how the child is doing.
Cyrus Jeke, the deputy director for Child Welfare in the Ministry, said a senior government official has been assigned to monitor how David is faring with Madonna and her husband, film director Guy Ritchie, with the help of the British government.
Neither Mchiela nor Jeke would disclose whether the official had visited Madonna's London home, where David has been living since October.
Madonna signed interim adoption papers when she and her husband visited in October on what they said was a humanitarian mission to help Malawi orphans.
David Banda, whose mother had died, was living in an orphanage and his father - who initially voiced some questions about the process - later said he supported it.
Under the interim order, David Banda was to stay with Madonna for 18 months during which time his progress would be monitored by Malawian officials before deciding whether final approval may be given for him to remain with her family.
Yohane Banda complained early this week that he does not have access to the American singer and wants to find out how his son is doing. But Mchiela said he would have to wait.
'Banda will have a chance to see his child again after 18 months elapses because Madonna will have to come back to Malawi for the court to rule whether she can get full custody of the child. He need not worry,' Mchiela said.

Oprah defends Madonna adoption
Posted: 04 January 2007 - From contactmusic.com

US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has leaped to the defence of pop superstar Madonna, insisting her adoption of a Malawian tot was an 'amazing' act.
Winfrey visited Africa herself earlier this week to open a school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa and she can't understand why Madonna's charity to baby David Banda has received so much criticism in the press.
Speaking on British current affairs show Newsnight yesterday Winfrey said, 'I applaud Madonna. I think it's an amazing thing that she did, and it makes me sick that people criticise her, because there are millions of children in this world who will die because no one came to save them. I think she deserves praise and applause and not to be criticised.'
Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie were granted interim adoption of David in October.
