Madonna poses for West End Stage debut
Posted: 30 April 2002
From www.ananova.com
Madonna has given a sneak preview of her new stage role as she rehearsed for her West End stage debut.
The star posed for a series of arty black and white shots as she prepared to open in the sell-out run of the play, Up For Grabs.
In one shot many Madonna fans would have been left wondering "Who's That Girl?" as she stood in silhouette with light flooding through a doorway behind her.
She appeared to be enjoying herself as she ran through the biting satire on the art world which first opened in Sydney, Australia, last year breaking box office records.
Director Laurence Boswell said rehearsals were going well: "Everyone is extremely relaxed. It's a wonderful company."

This photograph appears with the article on Ananova.com, it shows Madonna and fellow actor Tom Irwin in rehearsals.

Technical difficulties delay Up For Grabs
Posted: 27 April 2002

From the Press Asssociation:
Technical hold-ups have led to the postponement of the first three performances of Madonna's long awaited West End stage debut, it was announced today.
The complex staging of her production Up For Grabs has meant the first preview will not take place until May 13, but ticket-holders for the cancelled shows are being offered alternative dates.
Three extra performances have been added to allow fans to see the show and a spokeswoman said: "Everyone in the cast has been very accommodating." The axed shows at Wyndhams Theatre in London on May 9, 10 and 11 will be replaced by performances on May 18, July 6 and July 13.
A statement explaining the decision said: "The production has developed into a complex synchronicity between moving set, sound, music and projection and realising it in an older style theatre like the Wyndhams has increased necessary technical time."
Ticket holders will be offered either tickets for one of the extra shows or a refund. A special hotline has been set up to deal with the changes on 020 7369 1796.

Madonna funds "Jesus"
Posted: 11 April 2002

From www.peoplenews.com
Madonna's love of the theatre seems to be growing and growing. Not content with actually appearing on stage in the forthcoming Up for Grabs, Madge has decided to become a patron of the arts as well.
Mrs Ritchie has been named as one of the backers of a new play, Jesus Hopped the A Train by Stephen Adly Guirgis, that is to open at the Arts Theatre in Leicester Square on 24 April.
Clearly aware of the impact of the names Madonna and Jesus together on the front of a theatre, the canny producers have decided to credit Madge by placing her name on the front of the building.
Madonna first saw the play at the Donmar Warehouse and has made a significant donation to the play's £200,000 budget.

The Sunday Times annual UK Rich List has Madonna and Guy placed at number 161. They have moved up from position 183 last year.
Here is what the paper says about them:
The Material Girl is getting into the swing of life as an English lady. With weekends at her £9m Wiltshire estate and a £5.7m London town-house for weekdays, life is looking good for Madonna, 43 and Ritchie, 33, her husband of just over a year.
On the work front, it has been a busy year for the singer. Her GHV2 hits collection was released in November and by January it had notched up 600,000 sales in Britain and 1m in America.
Her Drowned World Tour brought in more cash. The magazine Amusement Business reckoned the 47 performances grossed nearly £53m.
Her total album sales now top 150m and she has had more top 10 singles than any other woman. Her accumulated royalties and property in America and Britain total about £190m.
We add £10m for Ritchie's wealth from films, principally the hits Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.

Frozen collaborator speaks
Posted: 04 April 2002

Craig Armstrong, the man behind the wonderful strings arrangement in Frozen has spoken to Time Out magazine (03-10 April 2002 issue) about working with Madonna.
Although Madonna is only mentioned in the sidelines and is not part of the main interview, what he has to say is very interesting.

"With someone like her, you think, 'Oh will she be in the studio?'. But actually, she is there all the time - from morning to morning.
She doesn't get enough credit in my book for being a great songwriter. I've got a lot of respect for her, I mean how many albums has she done? And the quality control is pretty good.
What's my favorite? Well it has to be the 'Ray Of Light' album. I worked on 'Frozen'. I put a lot of work into that and I think it came out pretty well.
She's doing a new album at the moment. I asked her what it was like....What did she say?....She said it was good! Hahahaha!"
